Ahhh...it's holiday season- the best time of the year. Finally, there is an ending to all of the stress of final papers, projects, and exams in the near future; you have almost survived your first semester of college. You continue to persevere through the relentlessly growing piles of work by dreaming of that glorious three week break that is just around the corner, yet so far away. Sleeping peacefully in your own bedroom, no more early classes, showering in a clean bathroom, the luxury of home-cooked meals, and visiting with relatives are all aspects of the holiday break to look forward to. However, coming home for the holidays and being around some of these relatives for the first time since school has started is bound to lead to a million questions, suggestions, personal anecdotes, and judgmental reactions from everyone about your collegiate life thus far. Here are 18 instances when the cast of "Friends"accurately portrays what the college freshman is internally thinking, or screaming, when their innocently pondering relatives choose certain topics of conversation during family gatherings.
1. "How are you adjusting to college life?"
2. "It is important to choose a major that you are passionate about, but at the same time, you need to choose a major that will guarantee a stable job that you can be successful at."
Trust me; I know. I've heard this a million times.
3. "Back when I was in college..."
4. "Are you dating anyone?"
When I answer "no," please do not ask, "Well, why not?"
5. "Are you sure you want to do that?"
6. "Are you learning a lot?"
7. "One difference between my college experience and yours is that the Internet has made everything so much easier for you. Wow, the development of technology is mind boggling..." says your great uncle, who then continues to be "mind boggled" about technology for the next 15 minutes.
Um, the Internet doesn't solve everything.
8. "Can you believe that your cousin got accepted to the grad school of her dreams? And on a scholarship! Did you know that your younger brother earned straight A's this quarter? Have you heard about the football team's great season? When your class graduated, so did the team's losing streak..."
Can't you just let this already struggling college kid have a break without being reminded of all the great things other people are doing?
9. "If you would have done this instead of that, then maybe things would have worked out better for you."
I begin looking frantically around the room for my parents because they made me; therefore, they are responsible for me, or at least responsible for getting me out of this conversation.
10. "Are you working over your holiday breaks?"
If by "working" you mean "catching up on sleep" then, yes!
11. "Where are you going?"
Maybe there are better conversations happening in the kitchen. If not, I'll at least get another slice of pie.
12. "So just to clarify, you didn't get that scholarship?"
13. "It looks like they weren't joking when they said freshman fifteen."
14. "Are you making time to volunteer?"
15. "Are you sure there's a place for your major on the job market?"
No, but I am "sure" that I'm done with this conversation.
16. Asks, "What are your plans for the future?" then starts having a completely different conversation with an entirely new person across the room...
Eh, who cares? I didn't really want to attempt to give an answer anyways.
17. "Remember when you used to wear nice clothes and do your hair everyday? What happened to you?"
You are lucky that I look halfway decent for today's festivities.
18. "Are you going to stop by tomorrow for leftovers and family board games?"
Another day of questions, judgments, and faking that everything is okay? No thanks.
