If you're anything like me your mom has been asking, practically begging, you to give her a Christmas list since the beginning of October. The thing she doesn't understand though is that not only do I not know what to ask for, some of the things I want to ask for she can't give me. I'm sure just about every other college kid is in the exact same boat when people start their annual questionnaire of "what do you want for Christmas". So here's to all the uncertain college kids as you send in your lists to Santa, we all know what we more than likely desire to ask for and the things we actually ask for.
What college students wish they could put on their Christmas list
1. Money
Now, I'm more than aware of the fact that some people do ask for gift cards, I mean so do I, but in all reality if I were to put money on my Christmas list my mom would probably give me a funny look and tell me there's no way possible she's just going to hand me a wad of cash as a Christmas gift.
2. A steady, well paying job
This one is pretty self explanatory. I can't live off of mom and dad forever but interviews and job applications are an absolute hassle
3. Alcohol
While this would not personally be on my desired Christmas wishlist, it fits this category because college kids, as the stereotype goes, are broke and don't want to pay for something they can get for free elsewhere.
4. Food
Mom and grandma's home cooking? Sign me right on up for that one the dining hall just isn't gonna cut it.
5. A higher GPA
This one is basically the same as the well paying job, I've been striving and trying to thrive at school to get a GPA I'm happy with so why not ask for a little boost here or there if you can? So Santa if you know my profs please go ahead and hit them up.
6. More than 4 hours of sleep at night
Sleep = love but school and my social life have me averaging right around 4 hours of sleep every single night.
7. A grad school acceptance letter
I'm just trying to do my best to get an education and get a job that pays enough to keep me alive so I mean why not just through an acceptance letter or two in there?
8. A pleasant roommate
We all just want to be able to live in a space that we are happy and comfortable in, luckily I've been blessed with that but for those who haven't asking Santa for it may work out at some point.
9. Student loans to be paid off
Again, we are all broke so not having to spend more money that we have to is what life is all about.
10. A way to balance school, work, and social lives
Go back to number 6 for better clarification if you need it.
11. A stress free exam week
Stress sucks and so do exams, combining the two is a recipe for disaster.
What college students actually put on their Christmas list
1. Air Jordan Retro XI
You can never go wrong with a nice pair of shoes, especially when they're a product of the brand named after the GOAT himself.
2. Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc)
There's nothing wrong with racking up on the basic essentials so you don't have to pay for them yourself later on.
3. A new keurig and K-cups
You know how they say your body is made up of nearly 70% water? Yeah I'm made up of about 70% coffee so I'm down with free coffee
4. Princess Pandora ring
There's something about a little bling that drives people crazy.
5. Fitbit
Just about every single college student makes it their New Year's resolution to get back in the gym and cut down on the weight they've gained since getting to college. Nothing like a good old Fitbit to keep someone on the right path.
6. Starbucks Gold Card
Refer to number 3! Basically coffee = life. Also I know you can't necessarily buy these but maybe Santa drinks a lot of coffee.
7. Collegiate apparel
If your university is anything like mine the prices at the student stores is astronomical so getting a cute sweatshirt or a pair of sweatpants comes around only every so often (i.e. Christmas).
8. Cooking supplies
Growing up sucks sometimes and you know you're old when you start to ask for pots and pans for Christmas instead of toys or clothes.
9. Gift Cards
Saving money is the key thing to most college students so gift cards for free food or to use at local shops is always a highly appreciated gift.
10. Beats by Dre or Boise Noise Reduction Headphones
My workouts and study times are just not the same if I don't have a good beat to jam to or some music to make me focus. It's all about drowning out the world sometimes so you can focus on you.
11. Workout attire
Number 5 says it all, that New Years resolution can't happen if you don't own anything to wear to the gym.
Now let's be clear this is not my, nor anyone else in particular's, Christmas list. This is just the reality of what majority of college students wish they could ask for versus what we ultimately end up asking for. Whether we want to believe it or not this is the reality and the world we live in today so while we wait out Santa in hopes he brings us that diploma I'll settle for a nice big box of hot chocolate mix for now. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
