For The College Student In Waiting

Whatever you're waiting on will come, so in the meantime might as well have a good time.

For The College Student In Waiting
Katie Wegmann

It seems like these past few months all I've done is wait, and it has me in a bad mood. I wait to get my grades back, I wait to hear back from the hundreds of companies I've applied to, I wait for graduation, heck, I'm even waiting for my senior pictures to get back to me so I can send out my announcements.

Now, I typically pride myself in being a patient person. If something goes wrong in my life or tests my patience, I have a cool head and can figure it out. But this constant feeling of waiting for the next step in my life has me missing out on what's happening right now.

So, for the college student like me in waiting,

Whether you're waiting to get over your last breakup or waiting to meet someone new, whether you're just waiting for this semester to be over so it can be summer or if you're waiting for graduation and the post-grad life, whether you're waiting on the results from the last paper you wrote or test results that determine your future, or even if you're just waiting for the weekend during a long week, this is for you:

Enjoy what's happening right now.

I know, it's so cliche to treat the present like a gift (ha) but it's true, it really is, and it should be enjoyed because it'll make you a happier person. I get so caught up in what will be happening in a few weeks, what my life will be like, how it might change, etc., that I completely disregard what's happening in my life right now. So often we "just have to get through this week," and what kind of mood does that leave us in? Not a good one. Why should we constantly be spending our lives like this?

There's nothing wrong with looking forward to something, and there's nothing wrong with making plans, but don't forget to remember how good your life is right now. Because it is good.

So, if you're waiting to get over your ex, surround yourself with your friends and have a good time. Enjoy your single life and learn about yourself. If you're waiting for summer, don't throw the rest of these last weeks of school in the trash and give up, study hard and treat yourself for your hard work. If you're having a rough day, find a patio and a margarita. Instant mood booster.

And if you're waiting for graduation, you only have a few weeks left in this environment with these people; in this place you've called home for the past few years with the people who became your family away from your family. Stop counting down the days until "freedom" and enjoy life right now before everything changes.

The beauty of college is that there's always something you can do or someone you can call to make the most out of each day, like going to the grocery store with your best friend instead of by yourself, or going to your favorite happy hour multiple times a week, or finding a show to binge watch with your roommate, or going out on a Tuesday night. There are so many options for turning your waiting into a good time.

Waiting for whatever's next can feel like you're stuck in a rut real quick. Don't let that happen. Whatever you're waiting for will come, so in the mean time take charge of each day and make them good, because you can, and life's simply better when you have more good days.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
