Entering college means starting the beginning of the “real world” you’ve been striving for for so long. It’s a (sometimes) magical place where you slowly start learning what it is you think you want to do for the rest of your life.
However, with being in college comes something that you didn’t think you’d dread so much. The questions. The never-ending questions that you are hounded with by friends, family, and strangers alike. You’ll get tired of them, quickly. You’ll tire of good ol’ gramma Sally asking what your major is for the umpteenth time. But never fear, because that’s what I’m here for. Here is a list of frequently asked questions that you’re likely to receive and the potential answers that go along with them.
What’s your major?
For those who just entered college, you do not have to have an answer. For those who are just about to graduate, give them an answer that isn’t actually true, especially if a family member or friend asks. “Yeah, I’m double majoring in philosophy and botany.” I wish you luck if that’s what you’re actually majoring in.
How are you?
Chances are, this is one you’ve gotten a lot. They’re good. Same as when you asked five minutes ago.
What do you plan on doing with your major?
This question can be real tricky. If you’re majoring in something like accounting, you can literally just say, “I plan on being an accountant.” But for someone like myself and plenty of others, we have absolutely no idea what to do with our major.
Perhaps tell the asker that you plan on becoming the next president of Microsoft, who only majored in art history. Or instead of being a smartass you could be honest and tell them you have no goddamn idea.
Do you like it there?
Do I like it where? At college? Or maybe at that bar where I’ve become a frequent customer? In all honesty I prefer the one where I can drown my sorrows in tequila, but that’s not what you’re probably wanting to hear, so YES I AM ENJOYING THE CAMPUS AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. EVERYTHING IS FINE. STOP ASKING.
How are your grades?
Do you ask them about how terrible their lives are? I sure as hell thought so! THEY’RE alright…
What do you do for fun?
There is an endless amount of answers that could lead to disappointment or that feeling of harsh judgment you’re so used to. Just use one of those.
What do you plan to do after college?
The answer for all of us is usually one in the same. We plan to hopefully not die and maybe find a job that’ll pay us one penny more than minimum wage.
And there you have it. There are a few questions that are frequently asked of college students. If you’re tired of giving an answer, just give the asker this article and leave them to it.
