So you've finished your very first year of college. You are no longer the clueless freshman. Finally, you can go around bragging that you have a whole year of college education under your belt. You've learned all the tricks of the trade. You know the campus like the back of your hand. You no longer break out in a nervous sweat because you are still coming to grips with the fact you are a college student. You've done your freshman due diligence.
We're back on campus as sophomores this year. We anticipate this year will be better than our naïve freshman first year. The first two semesters were filled with General Education classes, dorm rooms, and awkwardness, but not this year... or so we thought.
Several weeks in and we discover college isn’t as great as last year. College is no longer this new, exciting wonderland we thought it was when we were freshman. In reality, we've now realized it's a sleep depriving, soul-crushing nightmare we can't wait to be done with. We are now being forced to choose a major. Our advisors are pressuring us to "have an idea of what we want to do after graduation" while also asking "do you think you want to go to grad school?" Your stress levels begin to sky rocket because you now have you figure out the rest of your life while also finishing up you God-awful GenEd courses and start your prerequisites for junior year.
We are jealous of the upperclassmen who seem to have it all figured. They have their sights set on graduation and actually have career plans. They are building their resumes by getting internships or taking the first steps of getting into grad school. These upperclassmen are becoming actual adults while we're lying in bed crying into our bowl of cereal after finishing the 13th hour of our Netflix marathon.
Don't worry second-year college kids, all sophomores have been in this slump, you aren't alone. I know you feel like you are slowly drowning and will never catch a break, but you just have to learn to roll with the punches. It's okay to not have it figured out and it's also okay to change your mind. The best part about the sophomore slump is that it only lasts a year. So hang in there sophomores, you’re doing great even though you probably feel like you are failing.
