I would like to think of myself as a pretty patient and easy-going person, but if there's one thing that college has taught me, it's that a lot of little things can start to grate on your nerves when you deal with them enough times. I could probably write a novel of all the everyday annoyances I eye-roll at, but here's a collection of the 15 top pet peeves of being in college/living on a college campus.
1. Slow walkers
If you want to walk at a glacial pace, be my guest, but PLEASE do not travel with a pack of 10 fellow "slow walkers" and take up the entire sidewalk because some of us are actually trying to get to our destination at some point today.
2. Lines
Whether it's the line for the bar on a Thursday night, the line for the stir-fry station at the dining hall or the line to buy concert tickets, nothing could be worse. If the college knows they have a student body of 10,000+ wouldn't you think they'd have some better way to maintain crowd control. Yeah, nope.
3. Excessive PDA
We get it, you're dating!! Is it really necessary to hold hands in class?
4. Parking (or lack there of)
Parking signs on a college campus may as well say: "Don't park here ever or else your car will be towed and you'll have to pay $150 to get it back. Also if you're lucky enough to find a metered spot EVER, better make sure you get back to it in time cause if you're a minute over you'll already have a ticket."
5. Laundry
There's really just no easy way to do your laundry at school. You'll either end up lugging it up and down flights of stairs, having to run the dryer 4 times for your clothes to actually dry or pay $10 to do a load. And if you're like me, you're unlucky enough that all of the above apply.
6. Crosswalks
Pedestrians decide to run out when you're a foot away going 30 and drivers see you standing at the edge from 100 feet away, but make no effort to stop and let you cross. Lose-lose situation.
7. The dining hall between 5-7 PM
Unless you enjoy circling the dining hall 12 times in a sad and failed attempt to find a table, it's probably best to just avoid it at all costs during the common dinner hours.
8. The gym at all hours
"How is it possible the gym is this crowded at 7 AM on a Sunday?!"
9. The bus system
Weekdays: 100% chance that the bus will be off schedule and make you late for class.
Weekends: 100% chance that the bus stop will be so crowded that trying to board is like The Hunger Games.
10. People talking loudly during class
I have no idea who raised the kind of people who think it's okay to speak at a regular volume during class when the teacher is lecturing. Not only are you blatantly disrespecting the teacher, but you're also probably getting glared at by all your peers who can't hear because of you.
11. The morning try-hards
If you walk in late to your 8 AM with winged eyeliner, prepare to be judged by everyone in the room.
12. Loud neighbors
Are people not aware that the walls in dorms and apartments are very thin or do they just not care? Either way, I don't want to hear your techno music at midnight on a Monday night, thank you very much.
13. People who trash the hallways and elevators
Nothing soothes a hangover quite like stepping into the elevator in the morning and finding someone's half eaten pizza and a spilled beer.
14. Talking in the quiet room of the library
It's called the "quiet room" for a reason. That does not mean I want to hear you loud-whisper to your friend about what that boy from your finance class texted you.
15. Clueless professors
There is NOTHING more frustrating than hearing your professor say that everybody bombed the exam and then lecture us about how we should be studying harder. Professors, how hard is it for you to see that if the whole class failed your test then maybe the problem is you and not us??
