How College Made Me Appreciate My Parents More

They go above and beyond for us. College opened my eyes and made me appreciate all the things my parents did to get me here.

How College Made Me Appreciate My Parents More
Gabriela Jasek

My early teenage years were nasty. When I was a teenager, there were some (many) times when I failed to appreciate my parents. Sometimes, college educates beyond the textbooks and can teach valuable life lessons. In my short time at college, one lesson I have learned is how much I need and love my parents.

Many underestimate how hard it is to live away from home. For the past 18 years, my parents worked hard to accommodate all of my needs. Now, it is up to me to take care of myself. Leaving home for college was such an eye opener on how much I relied on my parents. No more home cooked meals, no more folded laundry, no more clean bathrooms, no one to kill the spiders (which I have yet to encounter, thankgod). But really, take a second and think about all the things parents do for us. Living on my own showed me how much my parents did to ensure I was raised well, healthy and happily.

The main goal of attending college is to be successful. My goal was to work hard, become successful and make myself proud. When my dad hugged me goodbye and told me to make him proud I knew my job at college shifted. It wasn’t only to work hard to make myself proud, but to make my parents proud as well. I dream of the day when I am successful and my parents say, “I am so proud of you, you did it.” If that isn’t enough motivation to study an extra hour for an exam or to actually do your work on Sundays, then I don’t know what is. My parents have done so much in their lives to make me proud; I want to do the same for them.

It wasn’t until college where I learned how fortunate I am to have my parents. Not everyone is lucky enough to have two parents who love and support them the way mine do. College has opened my eyes to how lucky I am to have them. I learned to appreciate every little thing they do for me so much more. I can’t imagine my life without my parents. Knowing there were times where I didn’t appreciate them makes me sick. My parents are the two most amazing, supportive and influential people I will ever know.

Being a teenager comes with a lot of ups and downs. A lot of people come and go, but my parents were always there. I never realized how much my parents have done for me until now. College taught me to appreciate my parents because they have gone above and beyond for me. I love my parents dearly and will do everything I can to show my appreciation for them. My parents have done one heck of a job raising me and I couldn’t be more thankful for them both.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
