If you're a fan of "Parks and Rec," you completely understand the struggles of Leslie Knope and her friends. Leslie Knope is just a hardworking government employee who, along with her friends, tries to better the crappy city she lives in. Much like Leslie, college students are just hopeful and hardworking students who just want to better the crappy situation they're in. So here are several situations in which the Pawnee Parks and Recreation gang completely captures the essence of college life.
1. Meeting new people.
In college, meeting new people is almost mandatory in order to have a good experience. The only problem is that meeting new people is an absolute nightmare. Until college, basically all your friends were your friends since diapers. Now you have to learn how to initiate an appropriate adult conversation? No, thanks.
2. Writing research papers.
So you come to college with only the prior experience of writing a two-page essay on "Catcher in the Rye" and now we are expected to write scientific research papers. So many styles: APA, Chicago, MLA, etc. What font? What size lettering? Do we use first person? Will the professor notice if we make the periods a different font to make it look like we wrote more? Does anything I'm saying even make sense!?
4. Constantly regretting all those times in high school we wished we lived on our own.
When we were in high school we constantly went on and on about how much we wished we were on our own. "I can get by fine without Mom and Dad," we proclaimed. Well now here we are, calling our parents every 10 seconds to reassure us that everything will be okay and that we won't die of exhaustion from finals.
5. Embracing adulthood.
Whether we like it or not, we have to become an adult while in college. That means we take full responsibility for our actions. We now have to make sure we get proper nutrition, that we get enough sleep, that we take ourselves to the doctor when were sick, and that we don't eat a Snickers and Gatorade for breakfast. We have to be adults. And like April says, it sucks.
6. Learning how to cook with only a microwave and limited utensils.
You have no idea how many times I've succumbed to eating raviolis straight out of the can because I was either too lazy to wash a bowl, had no time to do so, or just didn't have one. A broke and hungry college student can do amazing things. I once saw someone literally make a burrito out of Ramen.
7. Trying to keep in shape when you have 9,000 things due... like, yesterday.
I've considered people that go to the gym everyday in college to be magical, mystical fairies. The power to be physically fit and maintain good grades is one that I, and many others, have yet to embrace. After a day of classes and a night of homework, my mind is too far gone to tell my body to move. However, if you are one of those magical beings, kudos to you.
8. Begging your teachers to bring up that grade at the end of the semester.
We all have done it, gone to a teacher at the end of the semester begging for a second chance. We know 99 percent of the time they won't say yes, but our desperation overcomes our sense of logical thinking.
9. The teachers that respond to your begging with this...
I mean... come on! You really won't raise my 89.9 percent to a 90 percent? UGH!
10. When all else fails, there is every college student's BFF...
Cheers to the weekend!
