To the Class of 2020,
First off, I would like to say congratulations. Congratulations to those of you who will be holding a diploma a few months from now. You have taken a step that not many people are able to reach, and for that I congratulate you. But, life doesn’t end at high school… Sure it’s a pivotal time for adolescents, but after high school comes a larger and better turnover for you, college.
That’s right, college. For a 7 letter word, it’s a scary thought. You just finished working your ass off in high school and now have to go to college? Sure it may seem like a bummer, but college will be the best four years of your life. Here are some tips and tricks to getting through the fear of college. For starters, please for everyone’s sake, don’t wear your high school gear. Everyone that’s already in college, has gone to high school and assumes you have to. Sure you may have been Mr./Mrs. popular in high school, but no one really cares anymore. You have to start at the bottom of the totem pole and work your way up.
Secondly, enter your college dorm with a smile on your face, let people notice the bright side of you, sure you may shed a few tears saying good bye to your dog, cat whatever, but always have a smile on your face, even if it doesn’t brighten your day, it will brighten someone’s day. Thirdly, attend all of your classes. Classes may suck, but they will be very beneficial for you in the future.
Take it from experience, it may seem like missing class is a good idea in the moment, but honestly it’s not. You miss 1 it pushes you back a week of work. Also, we actually pay for college, whoever pays, parents, yourself, legal guardian whoever, missing class is wasting money. Fourthly, be ready to have fun. College will be the greatest four years of your life, you’ll study your ass off, but you will also enjoy your ass off. You’ll make friends that will last you a life time, you’ll make girlfriends/boyfriends, you will learn to experience life from a perspective you would have never imagined. The best tip/trick I can give to you future freshmen is: Get ready to manage your time. Literally, college is all time management. It sucks to think that you’ll probably learn to function off of 5-6 hours of sleep, but it will also prepare you for the future. Sure you’re going to college to study but you’re also going to college to make a future career for yourself. So to you high school graduates, once again, I congratulate you on the hard work and effort you have put through this far, but there’s a fork in the road and it’s called college, you’re either going make it or break it. Good luck, and see you in the work force in a few year’s future college grads.
Sincerely,
An upper-classman
