Whether it is intentional or unintentional--It is human nature for us to often compare ourselves to our peers, colleagues, acquaintances, etc. That being said, it is easy for us to get in a rut or start to feel discouraged when we see our friends graduating and going on to do other things.
But, life is not a race and neither is school. You will get done when you get done. It is absolutely okay for you to go at your own pace and not be done when everyone else is.
Here are FIVE reminders you need to remember:
1. Nobody knows your circumstances until they walk a mile in your shoes.
Life happens and until someone can walk a mile in your shoes--they cannot possibly understand your circumstances nor can you understand theirs. Maybe some obstacles arose that has set you back, but that is okay.
2. Life is unpredictable.
Nothing in life is constant and consistent, change is inevitable. You couldn't have possibly known of the unforeseen future of you wanting to change your degree to a different area of studies. You couldn't have predicted the situations and problems that you had to deal with. Life is unpredictable.
3. Regardless of how much schooling you have left, you have made it this far.
No matter how far or little you have put forth towards schooling, it's better than nothing. School isn't for everyone and who cares if your pace is different than everyone else's. You have made it this far, don't get discouraged.
4. You're not alone.
5. Last but not least, comparing yourself to them will only make it worst.
Try to not compare yourself to others because it will not get you anywhere. Why waste your time comparing your life to theirs? It's not worth it. You will get done when you get done. Comparing your situation will not make your semesters go by faster. Spend that time investing in yourself and your academics.
