College Housing Problems

The System Is Broken

With many colleges having broken systems, many students feel as if they are not being treated fairly. The greatest broken system I have come to face in my college experience is the Housing Selection. Creating a point system based on GPA, years on campus and any documentations students with the highest points are given priority here on campus. However, there are still those mishaps where students who have a lower GPA, have multiple documentations and are the same year get the housing which others are not. When trying to reach any staff during this process many students are turned away because the staff member that they are trying to talk to is “in a bad mood”. With housing at schools being thousands of dollars on top of the actual tuition, as well as a housing deposit that needs to be paid out of pocket there is not a lot of help for the high amount of money being put in. All “regular” students who are non athletes are put lower in priority no matter the GPA of the athletic student. Meaning a student who holds a 3.7 and not an athlete gets sent lower down the list than an athlete with a 2.5. The school system needs to change, not only with praising the students who are talented at sports but also with not giving help based on the mood of the staff. There are better ways to figure out housing, or classes within a college campus. New and improved actions need to be taken in order to give a fair college experience to all students. Colleges are thousands of dollars and with them allowing you to be in debt for years later, as well as asking you for donations there is not a lot that these staff members do to ensure that every student who is paying their kidney away is treated the same as the students who come here for free to play a sport. Stepping up and speaking out against these actions is the only way to get any chance. Throughout this entire process, myself along with many other students was told to wait until the middle of summer for them to figure out my housing situation. This is not the first time a bad experience for housing has occurred. When entering college most of the freshman class was placed into triples and once again told to wait. Not many students are willing to draw attention to these situations because they do not know that they are wrong. Students are the ones paying and are not being given what they ask for, while the staff at colleges is being paid by the student's tuition and making them wait until they are good and ready to make any sort of change. The system is broken and needs to be changed for all incoming and returning students. Speak up.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
