The Holidays can be a magical time of year filled with Christmas spirit and wonderful music, not to mention the amazing food. For a college student home on break, it is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. We finally get a break after working so hard this semester and all we really want to do is relax. Personally, I believe the Grinch describes my feelings towards the holiday break perfectly. Most of us didn’t enjoy the Grinch’s dry sense of humor as much when we were little, but now we fully understand it.
First and foremost: trying to forget the hell week that is finals and just relax in your bed.
Ahhhh, we survived finals. Now let’s try to erase that horrible memory.
We end up eating so much and regretting it later.
I actually have a theory that the freshman 15 are caused by eating so much on break. I mean think about it, we are finally at home where there is real food. Sitting around and eating, even when you’re not hungry, happens almost daily.
Trying to make plans is actually really hard due to the fact that we just want "me" time.
I mean, all I want to do is sit around, binge watch shows on Netflix and sleep. I cannot be bothered with parties or lunch dates.
When we finally crawl out of the dark depths of our room and try to interact with the family:
I could sleep all day, but I have a mother that tells me otherwise. After days of relaxing and "me" time you eventually have to get out of bed and go see my family or friends.
Realizing it is two days before Christmas and you haven’t bought a single gift, plus there is a total of $2.52 in your bank account:
Maybe I can find a gift that I can make on Pinterest….?
Then, you realize high school people want to hang out.
This can be very stressful. Mainly because you want to show people you’re a mature college student and how much better off you are without high school.
You end up going to a Christmas or New Year’s party with a bunch of old friends.
This is stressful too because of the lack of wardrobe and a horrible habit of trying everything on in the closet and none of it works.
Then once you get there, you realize why you moved away in the first place.
You realize why you moved away to college and made new friends because most of these people you cannot stand to be around, anyway.
When your parents ask you what you want for Christmas:
Let’s be real, we can’t ask for free tuition, good grades, and a healthy social life so you just say socks.
But then it’s Christmas and you are the first one awake to open the presents Santa brought.
Although I am somewhat of an adult, I still want to be showered with gifts.
Then, your family bonds and watches holiday movies, making your heart melt.
You gather around the TV with your hot chocolate or coffee and watch wonderful Christmas movies. It really is family bonding at its finest.
You are trying to convince yourself that you don’t miss college and your friends as much as you really do.
Then you end up failing miserably and bawl like a baby till you can pack up your things and go back to your new "home."
