So it is the end of your first year at school and you still don't know what you want to do with your life. NEWSFLASH, that is perfectly okay. Very few people actually do if we are being honest. At the young age of 19 not knowing what you want in life is okay and totally normal.
Think about it as somebody saying they want to go out to dinner and tell you to pick, there are so MANY options that your head wants to explode, right? College is just like that. You have the world at your fingertips and being so young and having to pick is super stressful.
From the ripe age of 12, I had told my family exactly what I wanted to be and it stayed the same up until a couple of months ago. I started college as a Business Management major, switched to Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality (I wanted to own my own restaurant), and most recently changed it to Journalism at the wonderful age of 22.
You are allowed to change your mind or not know what you want. College is the time where you get to figure out who you are and what you want. You have only been out of high school for maybe a year where you were pretty much told everything you had to do and what classes you had to take to get your diploma whether it was something you were interested in or not. Sure you got to take a few electives but those four classes weren't enough to let me know who I really wanted to be and what I wanted to do.
Take your time, just because your brother or sister graduated in four years doesn't mean you have to do the same. Take a couple of classes that sound interesting and you know nothing about. Take that internship that you saw a flyer for on the back of the bathroom stall door. You have so much time to figure out what you want to do, don't just force yourself into something because you think it will make you the most money or because that's what your parents do. Do something because you want to. College is the start to the rest of your life and the rest of your life can't be determined by what everyone around you is doing.
Embrace that you are still free of knowing what you want and take the fun classes, learn something, meet people you would have never talked to, most of all just be you.
You are not defined by your college major so don't let it stress you out so much. Enjoy the next couple of years (not too much) and figure out exactly who YOU is.
