Where has the past 4 years gone? It seems like I was just starting my freshman year of college yesterday and I just finished up my first week of my senior year. I cannot believe it because the time has gone so fast. You really begin to look back on all the life lessons and things you've learned throughout your college career. For all you freshman out there, listen closely.
1. Enjoy the freshman dorms.
I think it is mandatory to have a pretty crappy dorm your freshman year. It is as standard as it gets. Embrace it, all of you have to go through it. It is a great time to meet people. I always said nothing brings people together like a pretty crap dorm. I remember leaving my door open and anyone could drop in and out of my dorm room. In the newer dorms you never really can see anyone so take full advantage of meeting people. Most likely these people will stick with you for the rest of your college career.
2. Fun but not too much fun.
College is a very fun time. The nightlife is always interesting on the weekends. From experience, it is much more fun going out under age. Once you hit the big 2-1 is really isn't as exciting. With that being said be smart and you will make it to 21 without an under age under your belt. I would guess thats not a fun phone call to make. Go out, do things, LIVE IT UP. But you are in school to learn and better your future. I've seen too many people party their way out of college their freshman year. Don't be a dropout statistic.
3. Get a high GPA.
I've learned that getting your GPA up high at the beginning is critical. Classes get harder as you go on. If you start off well, then you can almost coast your way to the finish line. You do not want to be borderline 3.0 towards the end. It will be much harder to land a job without it. Get off to a fast start and get those GPA's up.
4. Take care of yourself.
For many, college is the first time you are out on your own. You have all kinds of food options on campus. Its pretty amazing how you can become attracted to the unhealthier options. Go to the gym, eat well, get plenty of sleep and you do not have to worry about getting the dreaded freshman 15.
5. Get involved.
get involved on campus. Join groups and clubs. I wish that I became more involved my freshman year. I am involved in lots of things on campus now and I have enjoyed meeting new people and doing things that we all have the same passion for. It will keep you busy but when it is done you will be glad that your joined various clubs and groups.
6. Enjoy yourself.
These are the best days of your life. They go so fast. It feels like I've blinked and I am already a senior. Take it all in and enjoy everyday because before you know it you will be looking for your first job and starting your career.
