Joining Extra-Curriculars are fun, exciting and full of opportunities. The world is becoming driven by networking. By joining an extra-curricular you will have opportunities to network that you may have not gotten before. Activities include, singing groups, movie appreciation, fraternities, sororities, honorary societies, chess club, Harry Potter Club, and so many more. There is honestly a club for everything depending on where you go. If you cannot find a club you enjoy, grab a few friends and create your own.
1. Networking
Depending on the activity you choose, there are plenty of opportunities to network! By networking, you can get letters of recommendation, you can get your foot in the door with potential employers. You never know who someone knows. Getting a job in today's society is based on networking depending on the position you wish to acquire.
2. Friendships
Joining extra-curricular activities mean you are meeting new people! College campuses have a ton of people and it is not always easy finding someone who you connect with. By joining a club, sorority/fraternity, etc., you are meeting new people who share some of the same interests as you. You could meet your best friend(s) by joining extra-curricular activities.
3. Resume
Extra-curricular activities look great on resumes! Especially when you run for an office position within your group. Employers like to see well-rounded candidates and having clubs/ hobbies on a resume is a great way to appear well-rounded.
4. Stress Reliever
Every club is different, so not all of them will relieve stress. If you are joining a decathlon team, that is probably going to cause stress not reduce it. However, if it is what makes you happy, go for it! If you have a passion, such as reading, arts and crafts, hunting, hiking, music, chess, Harry Potter or any other fandom, there is usually a club for that. If there is not a club that you want on campus, grab a few like-minded friends and start the club! By joining a club that interests you, you will be happier and more inclined to go. You will not be stressing out over having to go, because if it is something you enjoy doing, you will be excited to go!
I personally am in 5 extra-curricular activities at YSU, and I have been brought out of my introvert shell and have made so many friends that share my same passions.
