5 Reasons Why College Is Better Than Highschool
Ashley Jane Conte

Most of us can't wait to get out of high school. Particularly because its drama center, you're there all day long, and you're swamped with work you feel you have no time to complete. Let me tell you, it gets so much better. I realized that the first month in college has been fantastic. People actually want to be here and right there alone makes it 50 percent better because there is no complaining. Here are five reasons why college is better than high school:

Reason 1: It's Not a Competition

In high school everything was always a competition with people. Who had the better grades, who looked the prettiest, who was more athletic, who was the most popular, and so much more. You name it, it was a contest. College is different in the aspect that people work together. We're all just trying to make it through and get a degree in the field we love. We see someone struggling, we help them out. There is no I in college, but there is a we. Your victory is everyone's victory.

Reason 2: You Create Your Own Schedule

You will not have classes starting from quarter of eight until quarter past two. Some days you'll have three classes, two classes, or maybe even no classes. With this, you can create your own schedule. It helps you plan times to do work around classes or even schedule time to have some fun with friends.

Reason 3: When the Professor is Done, You're Done

Sitting in class in high school after the teacher was done their lesson never seemed to make sense to me. Yeah, we could be working on work in class, but I'd rather just do the work at home. Apparently, college feels the same way. When the professor is done teaching you can leave class. I've had classes that get out half an hour early because there is nothing left to do. It's one of the best things.

Reason 4: You Can Change Yourself

If high school didn't treat you well or you didn't like who you were in high school, well you can change that and start new. You'll be making all sorts of new friends who have no clue who you are. Take that opportunity to make yourself be who you want. Have others see you how you want to be seen. This also includes setting goals for yourself if that's what you prefer. Anything from academic goals to personal goals. Even if you're going to a college where some people from you're high school are going too then that's okay. I guarantee you that they'll be changing also.

Reason 5: People Actually Want to Be Here

I can't tell you how many times I listened to nothing but people in high school say "Ugh... I don't want to be here!" Now I'm not talking about the occasional once every month or few weeks complaining (because trust me I've said it a few times), but I'm talking about the everyday complaining. If you don't want to be there then leave. You don't really run into that problem in college. Most everyone there wants to be there and if they don't then they leave. Plain and simple. In all honesty, it's nice to surround yourself with people who are there for the same reason you are and value their education.

Overall college is way better than high school just for these reasons alone. Hopefully, if you're in college it's treating you as well as me. But if you're not in college, let me tell you, it'll be worth it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
