If you were anything like me growing up, Disney (specifically Disney princesses), was your life. Diving deeper as a grown college bound (for round three) “Disnerd”, these Disney icons have some superb lessons in their movies, especially about college. I’ve noticed that I’ve become a multitude of Disney princesses, and you may notice it too.
“The window is open, so’s that door..” (Anna)
Who knew we owned 8,000 salad plates? This is you on move-in day… and your first month of school. You’ll notice every intricate detail of your new home, things you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
Opportunities are “Just around the riverbend” (Pocahontas)
“The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.” (Tiana)
This is my personal mantra. College is the place to work extremely hard and diligently to start making your difference in this world.
“When the raindrops come tumbling down, remember you’re the one who can fill the world with sunshine.” (Snow White)
Look there, they even knew what they were talking about in 1938! You will have a bad day, it just may not happen until the college euphoria calms down. Even when your days are rough, it will pass. I pinky promise!
SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL. (Aurora)
Okay, okay. You probably won’t need as much sleep as the Sleeping Beauty herself, but you don’t want to burn out halfway through the semester!
“Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!” (Belle)
You’ll need to become as infatuated with [text]books as Belle is with her reads. This is not a drill, I’m being completely serious.
“…Start on the chores and sweep 'til the floor's all clean, polish and wax, do laundry, and mop and shine up…” (Rapunzel)
If you didn’t clean before, you will definitely be bit with the cleaning bug in college. You’ll have to… or else your dorm will look like a tornado blew through it, and neither you nor your roommates will be happy.
College is your “trove.” (Ariel)
With many treasures untold, I can guarantee it. The college journey is completely yours, and it is what you make it! Make those memories!
“Some say our destiny is tied to the land, as much a part of us as we are it" (Merida)
This kind of ties with Ariel’s point (it must be a red head thing!). Anyways, your school will become part of your story. Part of who you are. After all, these years are what’s separating you from your career!
“You must be swift as a coursing river…” (Mulan)
The entire army sang this song, not just Fa Mulan herself. That in itself emphasizes how important this point is! You must be swift in practically everything: navigating to class, your studies, time management, limited procrastination. Your swift-ness must be on fleek at college!
“He loves me because I’m me.” (Cinderella)
As well as everyone else, Cinderella. Preach it! College is where your personality really shines, and not everyone will appreciate you for you. Guess what? That is a-okay! Just do you as everyone says.
LET IT GO. (Elsa)
This is another point that seriously needs to be stressed! There will be some things that will not go your way, and that doesn’t change in college. There’s many more opportunities that will come your way, I guarantee it. Breathe, have your fit of rage if you need it, and let it go!
It’s a “Whole New World!” (Jasmine)
I honestly couldn’t of said this better myself. You’re completely on your own for the first time, you’ve reached the college status, and you’re responsible for everything that happens. Nevertheless, your parents will thoroughly enjoy if you give them a call or visit them every once in a while!
See, even you can be a Disney princess surviving college. You thought you were ordinary… wear that crown proudly girl! Now onto trying to find a prince… (Don’t rush it!!!!).
