After being the first artist signed to Jay Z’s now infamous record label “Roc Nation”, Jermaine Lamar Cole (a.k.a. J. Cole) has now released three of his own albums and is one of the most popular artists in all of music today. Earlier this month, Cole announced the release date for his new album, “4 Your Eyez Only”, being December 9th. Coming off his latest release of a double platinum album, “2014 Forest Hills Drive”, in which he had 0 features, the expectations for Cole’s next album are through the roof.
What comes off as very surprising, is the fact that Cole had almost no promotion for his upcoming album. Like his last album, he used the tactic of surprising us, and announcing his release date just a week before his music dropped. As we wait patiently for December 9th, music fans everywhere have expectations through the roof.
Speaking of expectations, Cole’s upcoming album has huge shoes to fill. After dropping one of the best albums ever, and debuting on Billboard at No. 1 (for the third time in his career), “4 Your Eyez Only” is promised to be something great.
As I am a big fan of J. Cole myself, I don't want him to change the way he makes music at all. To me, what makes him great is the way that he can write a meaningful poem, with lyrics that are actually relatable, and then put those words on a sick beat. This really distinguishes him from many other relevant rappers. His songs speak of actual problems and ideas that we can relate to.
If his surprising announcement of his album release date didn't already excite you, Cole also released some snippets of his upcoming album, as well as a 40-minute documentary of the making of his album. Teaming up with TIDAL, Cole created an exclusive documentary which he named “Eyez.” If that wasn't enough, Cole also gave us the thrill of releasing two new songs, “Everybody Dies” and “False Prophets”. Both songs are already stirring up drama, in which he disses Kanye West, Drake, and Lil Uzi Vert (in which he calls him “Lil Whatever).
If I am sure of one thing, it is that Cole’s album will something great. The young star has shown us great promise and talent, and his next album will be nothing short of that. December 9th can not come faster.
