10 Things Your Barista Isn’t Telling You

When not in school, I spend my days working in a small coffee shop. If there's one thing I have learned, it is that there are a lot of misconceptions about coffee. So, here are 10 things your barista isn't telling you!

1. A Macchiato Is Actually Only Around 5 Ounces

Giphy

I definitely used to go to Starbucks and get a "Venti Iced Caramel Macchiato," but in reality… It is literally just a caramel latte. Starbucks just calls a latte, where the espresso and milk are not mixed together, a macchiato. If you want your drink to have milk on the bottom and espresso on the top, just ask for it "upside down!"

2. A Cappuccino With Milk Substitute Is Just not Going to Come Out As Good

Giphy

Very sad, but true. Any milk, other than cow's milk, just doesn't foam the same way.

3. If Your Latte Is Not Hot Enough… Please Tell Us!

Giphy

Having a lukewarm latte is the worst, and sometimes it just doesn't come out hot enough.

4. Decaf Coffee Still Has a Good Amount of Caffeine

Giphy

I don't know how to break this to you, but decaf coffee just has reduced caffeine rather than no caffeine.

5. There Is No Such Thing As An Iced Cappuccino

Giphy

A cappuccino my definition is equal parts espresso, milk, and foam, and you cannot make milk foam without heating it up simultaneously.

6. Most Of The Time, There Are Only A Couple of People Working

Giphy

Most of the time, there is no issue, but every once in a while, a group comes in with 15 drinks… We are trying our best to get you your coffee ASAP!

7. Cold Brew WILL Keep You Up All Night

Giphy

I know this from personal experience… This is true even if caffeine doesn't usually affect you.

8. A Small and A Large Latte Often Have The Same Number of Espresso Shots

Giphy

It's just more or less steamed milk.

9. Chai Does Not Have Espresso Unless You Get It “DIrty”

Giphy

It is technically a tea, so if you want espresso make sure to request it!

10. We Love to Talk To You!

Giphy

One of the best parts of being a barista is the conversation with customers! If you want to, just come up and talk to us! It really helps the shift go by faster!

Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or you drink coffee simply for the caffeine, these tips will definitely help making your drink decision easier!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
