Good old Coed, or Norelius Hall. Home of the first coed dorm at Gustavus and the infamous "sections" it is most certainly its own little world not only in Gustavus' bubble but at Gustavus itself. It sits alone across a parking lot and is fairly separated from other buildings and facilities. But that doesn't stop those who live in Coed from having a good time.
1. The walk across the parking lot gets you every time.
Especially during the winter. Whenever you are hungry you have to contemplate if it is really worth it to walk across our, albeit very small, parking lot. The wind is ruthless and it always seems endless.
2. You really get to know the people in your section.
I'm not sure why this certain setup really makes you get to know the people around you, but it is true. If someone would have told me when I was moving in that a majority of people I live doors away from would be some of my closest friends I would think they were crazy.
3. No one from other schools really understands what a section is.
You try to explain it with the classic "it looks like a horseshoe....kind of?" but they never get how it's any different than living in halls. But little do they know, it's way different.
4. There are not enough washers and dryers.
I'm sure this is a struggle most college students feel, but in coed, it never really makes sense that there is a total of eight washers and ten dryers for a building with 400 residents.
5. You never really see anyone from the other freshman dorms (Pittman/Sohre) unless you really put in the effort.
It's not that you don't like the people, but it's a really long walk over there (like, ten to fifteen minutes, that's long for GAC standards).
6. It's totally normal to run into someone of the opposite sex walking out of the shower at 2 a.m.
Our sections are intermingled. For me, the only elevator in coed is on one side of my section and a guys section is on the other. At first, I was a little uncomfortable with this, but now it's totally normal.
7. The elevator works as an unwanted alarm clock if you live near it.
No one knows why the bell that rings has to be so loud, but it is. We've mastered the art of just rolling over and going back to sleep (or back to our Netflix episode).
8. Having one Gustie Ware bin in the entire building is a real struggle.
I know, I know. It's not that hard to walk a little farther to the other set of doors to discard of Gustie Ware. But it just feels so much easier to let it pile up in my room.
9. Each section has its own rep.
At least it seems that way to other sections, and it's not always a bad thing! It's good to be the "fun section".
10. The brick wall matters.
If the people who live next to you on the brick side are loud it doesn't really matter because you can't hear them. But if the people on the regular wall side are rowdy there are no bricks to stop their noise.
