On April 21st Bobcats lined up to experience the most anticipated event of the year: Cowchella 2016 Electric Jungle. Artists such as CASH CASH, Chingy, and Nef the Pharaoh were featured, along with djs playing diverse, techno playlists.
The day began with students climbing a thirty-five foot tall “slidezilla,” and later painting a black light graffiti wall.
A hamster ball track was constructed so students could race each other to the finish line.
Live muralist Rick Alonzo visited to showcase his speed painting on a black canvas highlighted by glow in the dark paint.
Angel Coles ’19 thought “it was interesting to be exposed to new ways people express themselves through art. I liked seeing the paint turn from a mess into a beautiful piece of art.”
Some UC Merced students felt the headliners this year were, “disappointing. I heard that Cowchella usually headlines fledgling artists that are just starting up, but become famous soon after the event,” said freshman Kimberly Ramirez ’19.
“I did not expect CASH CASH to perform this year because he has not had a hit single since 2004.”
Others were excited by the djs and liked the “electronic sound. It was different and really added to making the environment seem like a Coachella music festival,” said Inder Gill ’19.
Bobcats dined on Indian cuisine from Little Taste of India, pad thai from Sam’s Café, and Italian food from Bella Luna Bistro.
This was the festival’s third year in initiation. Annalese Croup ’19 liked “being a part of a traditional event at the U.C. I’m so glad our school has such a creative outlook on how to bring the community together. It was really memorable, especially with all the great artists and activities. I can’t wait for our campus to celebrate Cowchella next year.”
