There are two types of people in this world; those who are way too involved in organizations, and those who aren’t involved in any. Not really, but most in cases, students want to get involved but generally have a hard time figuring out what their college campus offers them. We’ve all been nagged about involvement from the moment we stepped foot on campus, from the extreme involvement fairs to the Facebook call out meetings and flyers on campus galore. We’re almost positive we will never hear the end of it.
But just in case you do have a knack for involvement, here are a few underrated organizations that exist on this campus.
1. TEDx Indiana University
Ever heard of Ted Talks? No? Click the link below, it’ll change your life. PS, it’s the Tedx Talk Monica Lewinsky gave.
This IU organization is actually hosting a TEDx conference right here on Indiana University’s campus. There are going to be nine amazing speakers at the event on Nov. 13, and tickets are going FAST. Although this organization is not accepting new members for this coming year, if you would like to be a part of this organization for next year, look for their call out meeting times or check out their website at http://tedxindianauniversity.com/speakers/.
2. Indiana University Model United Nations
Only the coolest club around if you’re looking to strengthen your public speaking skills and debate skills, wear swag business casual, and travel around the world for conferences. IUMUN, Indiana University Model United Nations, is a young club that focuses on simulations and competitions, where students can learn about international relations and diplomacy. It’s basically high-powered debate, but in business casual, with lots of international students and a seriously good time. Think Frank and Claire Underwood from "House of Cards." The IUMUN team here at IU is actually a distinguished delegation, having won awards from several local and international conferences. It's another really fun way to get involved if you plan on taking over the world. Check out the website at http://www.indiana.edu/~mun/home.php.
3. The Odyssey Online
Yeah, yeah. You can actually write for Odyssey! People actually do that! Weird, right?
Seriously, though, it’s a super fun way to express your ideas, and all you have to do is apply. What better way for your voice to be heard than by writing for an online and printed publication tailored exclusively for the Bloomington campus?
If none of these organizations sound cool, here are some honorable mentions that are equally as cool as the organizations listed above.
4. Chi Alpha Christian Organization
5. Indiana University Mock Trial
6. Women in Business
This one is way too cool. Consider giving it a try!
7. Timmy Global Health
8. Trockman Microfinance Initiative
9. Scholarship Advisory Committee
And many, many more.
Involvement doesn’t have to be so scary, it can actually be fun. Step outside of your comfort zone and give one of these organizations a try, you might be surprised at what you find.
