Clothes hoarding, yes it is a real thing. And believe it or not, we are all guilty of it in one way, shape or form.
Have you ever realized when putting your clothes away that they are usually the same clothes, and that there are plenty of others that just hang in your closet and sit in your dresser unworn? Well, this might mean you are a clothes hoarder. But don't worry, it is something that we all suffer from.
You have those pants that you wore that one time but weren't sure if you liked the way they looked on you. Maybe they were a bit too big or too small, so you decided to keep them anyway. Well, these are the types of articles of clothing that lead to the clothes collection that keeps on growing. When you go through your clothes to pick out an outfit, most likely you will have a false memory of seeing yourself in those pants and will refuse to wear them, however, when going through your closet to get rid of clothes (which happens far less often than buying new clothes), you will most likely think that you will want to wear the pants eventually, causing them to stay in your closet when subconsciously, you know they will never be worn.
We all have clothes like those pants. Clothes that we might change our mind about, or will maybe wear to some occasion, some day that is far from relevant right now. We are all guilty of it.
Sometimes it might even be the satisfaction of having a full closet that can contribute to clothes hoarding. A full closet honestly looks a lot better than a half-full, patchy closet with huge gaps of clothes missing. Keeping clothes around that you might wear maybe someday will make a closet look happy and healthy. But what about when you go to buy new clothes and the closet is too full? Most likely we will shove some of the older and not worn clothes farther in the back and the newer clothes close to the front, resulting in not getting rid of the clothes that really never will get worn.
Cleaning out closets is one of the major factors that clothes hoarders just don't understand. Either we will not clean out our closets to get rid of clothes at all, or when we do, we are extremely picky and do not get rid of nearly as many clothes that are coming into the closet after shopping trips.
Everyone likes to have many options for outfits to wear that look almost new, but sometimes we keep too many clothes in our closets as options. I am guilty of it and so is pretty much every person that wears clothes. I am a clothes hoarder and I probably always will be because I just really love clothes and having options to wear.
To solve the problem of clothes hoarding I should probably just get a bigger closet. Maybe in perhaps my brother's bedroom? He can live in the closet sized room, it's totally fine.
