I had originally set out to write a cute little piece about my friend that takes daily photos of his school lunches. You will get this article from me next week, but this week I need to talk about something. For the first time in my life, I am legitimately terrified about the future. Not because I am worried I will never be as successful as I want of be or anything. That is a scary thought, but not as scary as the thought of what the world will become if Donald Trump assumes the presidency later this year. As much as we refuse to accept him as a serious candidate, he is the Republican nominee which gives him a pretty good chance of winning and half of the democrats I know are all but handing him the title.
I know that a Trump/ Clinton race is not what most people want. Unfortunately, it is a very real possibility. While Trump is rising up, swarms of people are shouting that they will stay home if Bernie Sanders doesn't win the primary. Democrats all over are advocating a Trump presidency by urging others to refuse to vote if their candidate isn't chosen. That is crazy! Do you understand how hard those that came before us fought so that we could all have the right to vote? Most of us have had this privilege for less than a century and are already squandering it. I have friends that are still not registered to vote and still refuse to do so. Hell, half of you reading this article are probably "Bernie or Bust" supporters. Do you understand how high the stakes are right now?
While you are sitting at your computers, posting interviews of celebrities telling you why they won't vote if Sanders doesn't win, Trump supporters are rallying. Their ranks are growing at alarming rates. I understand why. People are angry. Kids go off to college in search of brighter futures only to return home in overwhelming debt with few job prospects. The current administration's policies which were supposed to help us ended up giving most of our earnings to insurance companies that refuse to cover our basic needs. Trump supporters are giving in to that anger and looking for someone to blame. Trump has given them a way to channel that anger. These people are motivated and will go to the polls in droves come November. They aren't going to sit at home and pout, they are taking action. Does that scare you? Because it should.
The policies Trump speaks of enacting are looking more and more similar to Hitler's every day. He encourages his supporters to physically assault those that oppose his candidacy. Every other day, we hear another story about someone who was brutally maimed by Trump supporters. Are these the type of people you want in power? Because you will guarantee it if you stay home.
I understand that Clinton isn't the most desirable choice, she isn't my choice either. That is fine. If you don't want to vote for either of the two frontrunners, you have options. There are Independent candidates to choose from. I'll even save you the trouble of googling and post the links here. Jill Stein is the Green Party candidate and Gary Johnson is the Libertarian candidate. Do your research. One of them might suit your views better if Bernie is not the nominee. Encourage your friends to register to vote. educate them on their choices. Only 57.5% of Americans voted in the 2012 election. That's pitiful. If everyone who is eligible to vote actually registered and voted their conscience, we could start a new era of American politics that we can be proud of. I implore you to look at your options, get out and vote. Can you really afford a Trump presidency? Because if not, you need to get out there and vote for someone better.
