According to most, 2016 was a terrible year. For the few others, myself included, it wasn't that bad. I like to think every year has its ups and downs, but with those downs, we learn and strive to have a better year with the next. Being a cinephile, I get very excited for the next year's upcoming films, however, 2016 was not a great year for film. There were multiple good ones, but not many great films. I saw a lot of new films, but it was fairly easy to choose which ones were my top 10 for the year. I can already say 2017 is going to be way better for blockbusters, my last article explains that very well here. Counting down from 10 to 1, this is my list of the top 10 movies of 2016.
10. "Suicide Squad"
Director David Ayer shocked me in the WWII drama, "Fury". He shocked me again with "Suicide Squad". The most recent DC Comics blockbuster had my heart from the corny dialogue to the slo-mo shots in the climax. Many critics and moviegoers alike hated Squad for being more fast paced and fun rather than story driven and serious. My friend claims it is the worst movie of 2016, however, I think its the 10th best. My rating for "Suicide Squad" is 8/10 stars.
9. "10 Cloverfield Lane"
"10 Cloverfield Lane" was a very good movie for the thriller department. Going into the movie blind on details, I was ecstatic for this film. With the tag being "monsters come in many forms", I knew there would be frights. John Goodman and M.E. Winstead deliver an impeccable performance in a movie that mainly takes place in two rooms of an underground bunker. I gave 10 C L 8/10.
8. "Doctor Strange"
As the most recent Marvel Studios film, I thoroughly enjoyed "Doctor Strange". I was very impressed all around with Strange. Cumberbatch killed the role of Doc, McAdams is always beautiful, and Mikelson was great as a villain. I cannot wait to see how the Marvel Universe expands from here. Strange was another 8/10.
7. "Rogue One"
"Rogue One" truly surprised me. I really enjoyed the way this story was told. Being the first stand-alone Star Wars film, I am eager to see what Disney will do after R1. There were many aspects that I was not expecting to like but yet walked out loving, especially the ending, which of course, I cannot say. "Rogue One" is 9/10.
6. "Deepwater Horizon"
Mark Wahlberg on an oil rig that is about to explode and Kurt Russell is his boss, yes, please. "Deepwater Horizon" was a visually fantastic movie with superior audio. Peter Berg did a wonderful job making intense scenes very realistic. The best part about this film was easily the emotions that the acting brings toward the ending. Deepwater is 9/10.
5. "Magnificent Seven"
Antoine Fuqua directed the East out of this Western. Judging this remake from the original, there were many similarities that make it easy to fall in love with. Western is a genre that is very touchy in the modern world of cinema, but the new Mag7 brings those original roots back. "The Magnificent Seven" is easily 9/10.
4. "The Accountant"
I love Ben Affleck for two reasons, we share the same name, and he plays Christian Wolff very well. In "the Accountant", Affleck portrays a hitman with autism. This alone makes the movie worth watching, however, I would say the action is my favorite part of it all. The sequences make this shoot-em-up thriller great for a Friday night adrenaline rush. If I need some numbers crunched, I'm calling Christian Wolff, 9/10.
3. "The Nice Guys"
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in a crime movie directed by Shane Black, already amazing. "the Nice Guys" probably made me laugh harder than any movie in 2016. There's everything in this movie: action, comedy, romance, and even Matt Bonner. I love this movie for many reasons, it deserves 9/10.
2. "Captain America: Civil War"
I love science fiction and I love Marvel Studios. GotG is still my favorite of all time, but "Civil War" is a close second. I was a little disappointed with the ending, but this movie was still near perfection. The Russo brothers did a very good job with both an engaging story and realistic action sequences. 9/10, simply.
1. "Arrival"
"Arrival" is the only movie on this list that is being considered for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner deliver an outstanding performance in unraveling a mystery surrounding aliens. This movie came closet to perfection for 2016 cinema. Sadly, it didn't recieve a 10/10, but came close at the 9/10.
