8 Family Christmas Traditions I Look Forward To
Janine Albert

Christmas is a huge deal in our family. When I say huge, I mean huge. It's probably the most important holiday in our family, and we have so many important traditions that I always get so excited for when Christmastime comes around.

1. Putting up our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving

We don't always celebrate Thanksgiving, but every year, without fail, we always put our Christmas tree up the day after. It's so much fun when the whole family pitches in to decorate our house and tree while we listen to Christmas carols.

2. Celebrating Advent

Since my family is Christian, Advent is a very important time of the year for us. It begins four Sundays before Christmas, and it is a time of waiting and preparing for the Nativity of Jesus at Christmastime.

3. My mom's fruitcake and Indian sweets

A lot of people think fruitcake is disgusting, but I personally LOVE it. I get so excited when my mom pulls out all the ingredients for making it at the beginning of December, and also when she starts making all different types of delicious Indian sweets like gulab jamun and payasam. You can see why I easily gain weight over winter break.

4. Saying we’re going to have a “Chronicles of Narnia” movie marathon, but then never actually having one

This has literally gone on for years. We own every single "Chronicles of Narnia" movie, and my siblings and I have read all the books. Every single year, my parents say we're going to sit down and watch all three movies in a row, but it still has yet to happen.

5. Christmas caroling

I am extremely tone deaf and I cannot sing for my life, but I love going Christmas caroling with my church every year. It's so much fun to go to everyone's house and sing Christmas carols with my friends with cringey Santa hats that I pretend to hate, but secretly love.

6. Dressing up in matching pajamas with my siblings

Every year, my mom buys my siblings and me matching pajamas and makes us pose in front of our Christmas tree while she takes photos. At first, I thought this tradition was a total pain, but now I'm actually okay with it. As long as she doesn't post the pictures anywhere.

7. Listening to Christmas songs in Spanish

Giphy

I don't know why this occurs, because my sister and I only know Spanish that we learned in school, and no one else in my family knows Spanish at all. But my family loves listening to Spanish Christmas carols.

8. Opening all of our presents on Christmas Eve so we don’t have to wake up early on Christmas

Giphy

It is a known fact that I am not a morning person. I hate waking up early, and I especially don't want to wake up early on Christmas. Our family just opens all of our presents on Christmas Eve after we come back from church, so we don't have to wake up early the next morning.

Christmas is a great time to spend with your family and friends while you recuperate from the stress and hassles of everyday life. Take this opportunity to spend time doing things you love with the people you love.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
