People seem to believe that in today's world handwritten letters are a waste of time. It's true that snail mail is going out of style, but I believe that this makes handwritten cards and letters even more precious than they have been in the past. There are fewer things that bring me as much simple, childlike joy as when I open my mailbox and see an envelope with my name written on it in the handwriting of someone I care about. We live in a world where it seems like everything is electronic: our bills, our books, even our forms of communication. It's because of this that actual mail--real, physical, mail--is more exciting and precious than ever. Knowing that someone took the time to choose a card or piece of stationary, pick up a pen and really consciously think about what they wanted to say to you should warm your heart. Texting, emailing, Snapchat and Instagram are great; don't get me wrong. I love seeing what my friends and family are up to and being able to communicate with them so easily and quickly is a massive blessing. But there's something special about holding a piece of paper in your hands and knowing that someone you love touched it and sent it your way, because they love you too. Sending snail mail can be an astonishing act of service with a life changing impact.
Especially around this time of year, people send out lots of mail to loved ones. Christmas cards and letters are shipped around the world to be shared with those we love. Around this time of year, people also talk about the magic and wonder of Christmas. But has anyone ever stopped to consider if there's a correlation between the two; cards and Christmas? I believe that sending some love through the mail contributes to the magic of this holiday season and who wouldn't love to make that magic last longer? Sending snail mail brings the magic of Christmas into the rest of the year. So next time you're wondering what you can do to make the holiday season last just a little bit longer or wishing you could find a way to brighten someone's day in an unexpected way, remember the power of a letter and send one yourself. If you're looking for a way to #LIGHTtheWORLD this Christmas season, send some mail! Your friends or family may cherish the words you wrote long after you send them.
