Diver David Boudia, 27, is officially headed to Rio for the 2016 Olympics thanks to his win in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform event with partner Steele Johnson. The pair scored 238.02 points more than the second place team yet they both remained humble. Rio will be Boudia's third time competing in the Olympics and Johnson's first. More impressive than the virtually perfect synchronization of their dive was what they had to say about God in an interview right after. Click on the image below to watch the dive and the interview.
WAS THAT AMAZING, OR WHAT?
In the article I wrote last week, 15 Reasons Why I Miss Camp, I touched on how giving the glory to God is something I haven't seen enough of outside of the Christian sports camp that I used to attend. Just a few days after I wrote that article, I saw the video of David Boudia and Steele Johnson's practically perfect dive, and their post dive interview on Facebook. It made me so happy to see these two awesome athletes share their identities in Christ and give Him all the glory for their spectacular accomplishment.
"I've been working for this dream for a long time, and it's -- honestly, I never thought the day would come, and I feel like I just blinked and now I'm on the 2016 Olympic team. But it's cool because this is exciting, this is fun, but like this is not what my identity is going to be in the rest of my life. Yeah, I'm Steele Johnson the Olympian, but at the same time, I'm here to love and serve Christ. My identity is rooted in Christ, and not in the flips we're doing." - Steele Johnson
It can be easy to identify yourself by what you do. It is something you are presumably good at and something that you would like others to know about you. Steele Johnson pointed out that while he is an Olympic diver, his identity is rooted in Christ. Above his title "Olympian," he puts his title 'Friend of God'.
"We' can't take credit for this. God be the glory." - David Boudia
Even though this pair beat the second place team by 238.02 points, they still chose to give it their all for the glory of God. They performed a spectacular dive, and then gave all the credit to the One who gave it all.
"We're just so thankful, and there are just so many sacrifices that have been made, by our coaches and my wife, and my family, and my parents... just so many, but nothing compares to the sacrifice we've had in eternity." -David Boudia
Boudia and Johnson are thankful for the sacrifices that the people around them have made for them to be where they are: headed to the Olympics in Rio. Although gaining the opportunity to compete in the Olympics is exciting, they are especially grateful for the salvation they've gained through Jesus Christ.
I wish David Boudia and Steele Johnson the best in Rio, and although I won't be able to see them compete in person, I will definitely be watching them on my TV and cheering for them from my sofa!
