Why I Chose To Go Greek

And why you shouldn't look down on me because of it...

Many people find that when they get to college, if they rush a sorority/fraternity and receive a bid, that is their ticket to popularity. However, some people choose to do this because they genuinely care for what that particular organization does. I have received many comments saying I am paying for my friends and that I am seen as fake, but through my point of view, that isn't the case.

You see, I am in a fraternity, and yes I do mean I'm in a frat. No, I'm not a guy, I'm a girl, but I am a part of a service fraternity. A service fraternity is there for a purpose and serves a certain organization. For example, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma are service fraternities/sororities for band members. Alpha Psi Gamma is a national honorary choir and theatre fraternity. I am currently an active member of Alpha Psi Gamma and I can guarantee you that I'm not paying for my friends. You see each fraternity/sorority I have listed serves a specific purpose. Kappa Kappa Psi, which is an organization on my campus here at UAM, can do many things for the band. They host marching contests, concert band contests, they provide waters at each and every football game we perform at and better yet, they lead the band in a positive direction that is far more than what I could ask for. Alpha Psi Gamma, well, we do many things such as help pay expenses when needed for choir trips, we help replace old and beaten down binders, we help with new dresses, tuxes, music, etc.

Each fraternity/sorority provides something that is always beneficial towards the organization it is representing. We may not always seem to be brothers/sisters, but in the end when it's time to come together and sing in perfect harmony, we always find a way to make things work.

I chose to go Greek because I want to have a purpose for something. I want to serve my school as well as help out the organizations I am in such as choir and band. All while I am not a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, if any of the brothers needed my help, you can believe I would help in a heartbeat because we as musicians come together in perfect harmony. I find being in an organization because you want to be seen as popular, it's a personal choice, but I see it as something that your heart doesn't really care for. But, if you truly have a purpose for being in your organization, go you, because we need to learn to serve our school and community rather than basing everything we do on popularity.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
