For a while, I often thought about following in one of my parent’s footsteps and getting a job in their respected fields. But something occurred to me that made me want to follow a different path. My parents were raised in different times where the future was dictated by their own choices. A college degree wasn’t needed as much as it is now and jobs were easy to come by. These factors gave my parents multiple options that would, in times like now, seem scarce.
I took pride in my parent’s decisions on their career paths, because making those decisions at a young age seemed overwhelming. My father was a police officer, and my mother is a legal secretary. These jobs may not seem like the most important, or ones that stand out, but I’m proud of what my parents have become. Recently, my mom was moved to a new office where she is the head secretary. My dad has received a bachelor’s degree while also being promoted to Captain. Their accomplishments show how much they have sacrificed to get where they are.
My own career choice has been based off of different factors including my education, the availability of jobs and my financial status. These factors influenced my decision mostly because they are the most important, in my opinion. My future now relies heavily on higher education as opposed to in the past where an education was not as much of a necessity. My own career path that I have chosen involves the field of communication, which could be considered a very broad field to study. But, because of how broad it is, it can include a variety of different jobs. I have chosen this field not only because it provides many job opportunities, but also because it has greatly interested me and is a constantly growing marketplace.
The job opportunities that I have been presented with because of this field give me more options. This gives me the same opportunity to choose what I want to do, like my parents did, which is rare in today's job world. Today, real world experience is needed to secure a rewarding job, thus providing the incentive to have an education base as well as relevant internships.
My choices for my own career are still in the works but have come a long way. With the help of my parents, I was able to narrow down what I was interested in and what I could see myself doing for most of my life. My parents had always encouraged further education and I had thanked them for that. However, having seen where they had come from encouraged me even further, giving me more incentive to choose a good career for myself. It influenced how I see that I can become a better person and make my own choices in the job world. I have to thank my parents for the help they unknowingly provided me with.
