Choosing Your Political Battles

Be careful who you discuss politics with; it could turn into something ugly.

Politics is inevitably a touchy subject. Opposing views can differ drastically coming from the far left and far right ends of the political spectrum. A mistake that many, many folks make is constantly bringing up the subject of politics with people who may have differing views. A far leftie does not want to discuss a far rightie's views, and vice versa.

A heated debate regarding politics is something that people like to avoid at all costs. But it's hard when someone is throwing their unwanted, dissimilar views in someone's face. Politics is just something that people are passionate about, whether it be for one party in particular, or for a more focused issue. It's just not something you discuss with people with differing views, complete strangers or even acquaintances. It can hinder a relationship or an outlook on someone as a person.

Don't go fishing for information on someone's political views, or their political preference. It's personal and chances are, the person does not want to share that information with you. It's actually quite uncomfortable when a busy body tries to stick their nose into those opinions. And it's even more uncomfortable when they find out you don't have the same views as them.

If someone shares a political post on Facebook, don't comment a snarky, rude remark. You can have your views in peace and they can have theirs in peace. As much as it might kill you to hold back some curt rebuttal, do it. It'll spare you a relationship and a potentially awkward encounter with that person.

If you commonly find yourself in an online political quarrel, maybe you should reflect on how many potentially offensive political posts you share. It's understood that snarky remarks should be refrained from, but to assure that no political argument will be initiated, reduce or eliminate the posts that reflect your views.

You will not convince the person with opposing views to think the same as you. You just won't. It's pretty much a proven fact. People love their opinions and believe they are right in all cases. It's very likely their views won't budge. So, it's better off not attempting them to sway their views to yours at all.

Some people just don't understand how fatal some fiery discussion about politics can be to a relationship. A person might think, "Wow, you believe that?" and a relationship can take a sharp turn for the worse, due to the natural state of American politics. Views have become so polarized from one another, it's often very difficult to participate in a level headed, normal discussion about politics. Much hatred is involved in it today, and spewing that hatred is unflattering. Folks spew their views close-mindedly and one-sidedly, which makes discussing the issues that face our country unpleasing and counterintuitive.

When in doubt, don't discuss politics with people who have opposing views, or you're unsure of their views. It'll save you your breath or your typing energy. It'll help you avoid awkward encounters and preserve relationships. It's worth keeping your mouth shut.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
