Choose A Major That Makes You Happy, Not What Makes You The Most Money

Dear future college freshman,

If you still are still trying to figure out what you want to do, always do your research on what kind of job you want after graduation. And if what you intend to major in will get you that job. And I know there are going to be a lot of people telling you what you should major in, and that it should be something that is going to make you money.

And obviously you want a job where it's going to pay good, but you want something that is going to make you happy, you don't want to be stuck behind a cubical all the time doing the same thing day after day, and not loving what you are doing.

I went through this when I was choosing my major, I knew I always wanted to be a journalist, and I wanted to go to New York and study journalism on campus, but when my mom got sick plans changed, my whole life changed at that point. I had to get a full-time job and work long hours in a factory that I hated going to every day. So going to school online was my only choice and didn't give me a whole lot of options.

So after changing my mind three different times, I came back to communications, I am a communications major with an English minor, and I have had people ask what can I do with a communications degree. well, the answer to that is a lot. Some people think that majoring in communications is like majoring in English and all you can do is one thing like teach.

And I tell them they are wrong because you can do some many things with a communications degree, you can work in many different fields such as public relations, human resources, journalism, media planner, advertising, teacher, web content manager, these are just a couple things you can do.

For me, I want to work in journalism, and for people who think you need a journalism degree to work in journalism is wrong, having a communications or English degree will also get you a job in that field. So if anyone tells you that you can't work as a journalist because you don't have that degree, well you can just tell them to shove it.

Just make sure you do your research on what you want to do with your life, and make sure that the degree you major in is going to get you there.

At my last school I went from communications major to an English major, but when I transferred to ECU they only have offered communications. But after doing more research before I committed, I realized that I can be a journalist with a communications degree.

To students who want to be a journalist, it doesn't matter if you are going to school on campus or online, if your school of choice doesn't offer a journalism degree, you have other options you just need to do your research and talk to your adviser to make sure that it's a great fit for you and what you want.

There is so much you can do with any degree really, don't let people tell you that you should have majored in something like engineering or medicine because you won't make any money being a writer or journalist. You need to major in what makes you happy not everyone else.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
