A few weeks ago I got a puppy. She is adorable, well mannered and absolutely nothing I was looking for in a dog. She is the exact opposite of what I wanted.
When I had finally decided it was time I got a dog, I had a very specific picture of what I wanted. He was going to be a small, scruffy mutt, and I was going to name him Sam. I day dreamed all the time, thinking about playing, taking him for car rides and spoiling him with all sorts of toys.
I even found the dog. He was the perfect size and he was scruffy as ever! I had found my Sam.
I made plans to go meet the dog later that day, and told my mom and friend about him. I told them how excited I was to have finally found the dog I had been looking for.
However, my friend said I should still check out the local shelter as well and to not fall in love with this one dog just yet.
So, we went.
I fell in love that day. We found the cutest three month old Sheppard mix baby girl. She was very shy and obviously very scared being in the place that she was.
We asked if we could play with her for a little bit, and when they brought her out I had forgotten all about my dream dog.
She was so sweet and playful. She took to me so fast, I had no choice but to take her home with me. I signed the papers and picked her up the next day.
Becoming a pet owner is a big deal, and it won't always go the way you expect it. Like I said, I had a very specific idea of the kind of dog I was going to get, and in the end got nothing I thought I wanted.
I did, however, get everything I wanted deep down and everything I needed. I got the best puppy I could have ever asked for.
I strongly believe that we don't choose our pets, they choose us.
By this I mean, we can say we want our ideal pets to have 'this list of qualities' all we want, but you can't fight fate.
I was meant to be Arya's (my puppy) dog mom. We were destined to be together.
I love her more than I thought I possibly could. I would do anything to keep her safe.
I know she loves me too. Everyone who has met her and seen us together can see it too.
Sure, she isn't the small scruffy boy I thought I wanted, but she sure is my dream dog. She has all of the qualities that matter!
So, if you are looking for a new furry friend, keep an open mind.
You never know who is going to choose you.
