In today's society, the main goal is to be considered "cool." Everyone wants to be popular, to fit in, to be looked at as the best. Unfortunately, some people will do whatever it takes to achieve this outlook. Even if this includes hurting those around us, it is seen as acceptable if it makes one look "cool."
This idea is known to be persistent as we reach high school age and older, but it is even spiraling down to younger generations.
Even at kindergarten age children are saying, "Mom, I don't want those shoes because they aren't cool enough."
So, whether this is with how you dress, your hobbies, or your attitude, why does it matter if others think you are cool? Shouldn't you be living for your happiness and not the idea others have of you?
Quite often people choose to be rude or even downright mean, just to get a laugh out of those around them. People choose to act differently just to be looked at highly.
People choose to hurt others just to make others notice them. Why is this seen as "cool"? This should not be accepted.
What happened to being kind to others and not caring what others think? What happened to being helpful to those around you even if you get judged for it? When did the main goal become popularity?
Things have changed, but they can change again. And we are the change.
Instead of buying the coolest clothes, buy the clothes you like. Instead of hiding your intelligence, sprout from what you have learned and use it to teach others. Instead of being rude and knocking people down, be kind and help to lift them up. Choose kind over cool. Choose the actions and words that will make this world a better place, no matter what those around you may think.
This world is a crazy place full of so much negativity, but we CAN change this idea. We CAN choose kindness. We CAN build each other up.
We CAN radiate happiness rather than look 'stuck up.'
This starts now. Change your goals and change your mindset. Be kind. It matters and does make a difference.
