Time flies. Who would’ve thought sitting next to you in first grade sharing crayons and lunches would only be the beginning of our friendship. Walking into the first grade terrified, I didn’t expect to make friends right away. Quietly, I sat next to you and shyly said hi, only to find out that you had the same fear as me.
How did this whole “friends” thing even work? We were just two six year olds who were clueless about the outside world. We only had a bunch of other six year olds and a teacher to rely on for eight hours inside a tiny classroom. How do you determine your friends? Well, life’s a risk and I’m glad I took that risk sitting next to you and decided to talk to you, because it blossomed into a beautiful friendship.
From sharing jokes, food, and secrets, I can count on you for absolutely anything. Growing up together was an experience I’ll always remember. Playing in each other’s backyards reminded us that it’s okay to let loose once in a while. Sleepovers taught us that there’s always someone you can rely on when you’re lost and confused. You taught me that it’s okay to not know all the answers to everything and to take things a day at a time.
They say you find your true friends when life gets rough, and I’m glad you were there for me when things didn’t seem like they were going to get any better. I knew at that moment, we were in this together. Our struggles, our accomplishments, and our future, we can tackle together because we always have each other’s back. When college came around, I never doubted for a second that our friendship would disappear. Now, look at us, almost done with undergrad, and still stronger than ever. Even though the distance is hard at times, I know that you are only a phone call away. Although we are making new friends each semester, they know exactly who you are because you are such an important person in my life. You are irreplaceable and my college friends just have to know about you, because all my stories I tell them, are with you.
I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being my first friend who is still a part of my life today. Thank you for being there during the best and the worst times these past fifteen years. Thank you for letting me call you when I’m just a bit homesick and for reassuring me that everything will be okay in the end. Thank you for never judging me since day one, even during our awkward middle school phase. Thank you for always supporting me and my dreams, because you’ve always believed in me from the start. I want you to know how important you are to me and how much you mean to me. I am so proud to call you my best friend. I am excited for the future because I know you will be in it. I am excited for the adventures that await us.
