Machine Gun Kelly or MGK as others call has released his fourth studio album "Hotel Diablo". The album is a mix of hip hop and rock, but the best part of the album is the door that it opens into the mind of MGK. He opens himself up and expresses his pain, drug addiction, loss, and even talks about suicide. This is what makes the album exceptional.
"Glass House" is definitely a powerful and in my opinion one of the best on the album. In the song the Cleveland rapper compares fame to living in a glass house. Describing it as fragile and yet he feels trapped in a cage. The best part of the song is when he shouts out Lil Peep. Mac Miller, and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. "Look, wish Lil Peep and me had spoke, but I can't get that back/
Just came from Pittsburgh, damn, I miss my homie Mac/ Yeah last time I got off the stage, I looked Chester in the face .But now he gone, and ain't no going back." Showing his pain in losing them and once again, showing that fame is just a fragile glass house that can break anytime.
"Burning Memories," meanwhile, explores MGK's vulnerable side and side-swipes his estranged mother with such lyrics as "This one's for the mama that I never knew/I took acid just to burn all of my memories of you/How'd you leave your only child at nine for another dude?/I hope he got some kids because your only son is dead." He's talked about his father and other family members on some of his other projects but this is the first time he's wrote lyrics about the mom who left. You can tell that the wound is still raw.
"Candy" is a song about drug addiction and how it starts off as just a way to escape, but soon becomes something worse. " I be takin' shots to the brain like that/ Blacked out drunk and I came like that/ Helpin' me to get through all the pain like that/ Yeah, driving through the rain like that/ Running from the fame like that/ On the front page like that I'ma go insane like-."
For those who still wanna hear the shit talker side of MGK, tune into "Floor 13". In the song he takes shots at other rappers and takes a shot at Eminem and his diss track "Killshot". "I just spent too many minutes watchin' little videos of shitty wannabe rappers dissing me/ I just spent the winter livin' after someone tried to send a kill shot, missin' me."
This album is a blend of rap and Linkin Park like emo rock. He's tried to blend rap and rock together before in his other projects and to be honest they weren't that good. Those were just party/ head banger records, which are cool, but the substance in this album is what makes it work.
