It's not an impressive object.
Once a flimsy fake silver, the necklace's chain has worn down to a bronze-ish color, still speckled with some silver. The pendant- a crescent moon inscribed with the honestly silly words "we dream together" — hooks perfectly around my little finger, and I often play with it when I'm nervous.
Anyone who sees it might not be that impressed, but this simple little necklace is very important to me. Although most people don't know it, it has a twin, or more like a complement, a golden chain with a golden sun, proclaiming that "we laugh together." It's currently in the possession of a girl who sometimes has blue hair, who has a smile like sunlight, who, even though she lives farther away than I'd like, is my closest friend.
You've seen best friend necklaces. They're silly. They're something middle schoolers get for each other. But when Sammy moved away after 9th grade, there was a real hole in my heart, and how much I missed her was intangible. Our communications went in and out, and it was hard for me to find other people I connected to as well as I connected to the girl I called "Samlax," a mix of her name and Snorlax, the Pokemon she always identified with. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever so quickly become so attached to someone, nor ever been so well understood by someone.
However, that didn't matter that much, because every time Sammy and I talked, even if it had been months, it was as if no time had passed and as if no distance were between us. And then she came to visit! We went to the mall and to old haunts, and it was at one such old haunt that I bought the necklaces- a pair package. I've worn mine nearly every day since.
Naive as it seems, I really believe in fate and in soulmates. I believe that some people are genuinely meant to be together, as friends or lovers or coworkers, even. People are like puzzle pieces, and with some people, you fit just perfectly. Sammy is that to me- a piece that just fit, and fit so well that even after years of hardly seeing each other, I still know that she is one of my best, my closest, my most valued friends. Sammy, I love you. Happy birthday, sun to my moon. I hope we can laugh and dream together soon.
