Now, I'm not one who likes going around throwing my opinions out there without it being asked of me, especially on the Internet (mostly because I enjoy living), so, with that said, I am in no way showing support, or lack thereof, for any of the 2016 presidential candidates that I write or don't write about in this article.
I consider myself a person who keeps up on her politics, though in no way do I consider myself to be a political aficionado.
Whether or not you believe that these people actually changed their stances, or whether these videos accurately portray them is beside the point. My point is, and let's just assume that if they did change their stances, that would be OK.
I was having a conversation with my dad recently, and I was explaining to him something that has really been irking me about the elections recently. What bothered me, and what still befuddles me is that people are using a candidate changing, adjusting, or yes, even completely flipping their stance as a reason to not vote for them. I do not mean to say that you not liking their new stance is not a valid reason to place your vote elsewhere, it's all fine and dandy if you don't want to vote for someone because of their stances, but personally, I do not believe that fearing that a candidate will continue to change is a good reason not to. What I am saying is that it is not valid to place your vote elsewhere just because they changed, and you are now afraid that anything that they say they stand by now could change.
Why do I not consider this valid? Well, let me begin with what I think is a foolproof test to tell whether someone is a liar (/delusional) or not.
Begin by asking them: "Have you ever changed?"
If they answer no, then they are a liar, or seriously delusional.
If they answered yes, then they are at least telling the truth in this instance.
Humans change, it is a part of our nature. And, call me crazy, but I'm way more likely to trust a politician who admits that they have changed than a politician who claims to have stayed the same throughout their entire career.
OK, let's play Devil's Advocate. Let's pretend that someone could somehow remain the same for their entire adult life. Does that sound like someone you'd want to be president? I don't know about you, but to me, that sounds scary -- a human being that has never challenged his own views.
I want someone who stands their ground, but admits when things must change to be in the White House.
