I spend a lot of time on social media. Whether it's Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. there is always a new post to look at. That is the problem, it never stops. Social media can be a very great thing if used in a positive way but at times I realize that I am only checking social media because it is a part of my routine. Sometimes I don't even focus on what I am scrolling through, I just scroll.
A lot of times we see what other people are posting about on social media and become envious. For instance, if you see people posting about a party you weren't invited to it can become a game of "why wasn't I invited?" or "do they even like me?" which opens up a rabbit hole of insecurities. I am guilty of letting posts on social media upset me but I am stopping now.
I have learned that people tend to post the good things that happen and not the bad. A simple observation but it changes the way I look at social media posts. Someone may post tons of pictures of all the fun they are having but that doesn't mean their life is perfect. People usually don't want to share the bad things that are happening to them.
Social media can become a contest of who has the best life and that makes the whole concept toxic. It is not healthy to obsess over what everyone else is doing and whether or not you are doing better than them.
The truth is, the number of likes and comments you get or the amount of followers you have does not define you. Having more followers than someone does not make you better than them. People use the numbers they see on their screen to boost their ego when in reality it doesn't mean anything. Sure, having a lot of followers or a lot of likes is great and all but it is not the only thing that matters. I don't think that people should post just to get likes but rather post because they want to share a moment of their life.
Social media is an amazing tool that can be used to keep in touch with friends and family no matter where you are and it should be a positive environment for people to share their lives. I hope people start using it for good rather than as a competition.
