You have to find your passions, because you'll be in your career for the rest of your life.
It is crazy how society believes at 18 years old, you are supposed to have your future career and what you want to do for the rest of your life already planned out. They say you should know what you want to be before you graduate high school. For me, I was always changing my mind. My freshmen year I wanted to be a guidance councilor, sophomore year I wanted to be a teacher, junior year I want to be a Phlebotomist. Finally, my senior year I thought for sure I knew what I wanted to do. I was really confident about my choice, I wanted to be a nurse. As graduation came closer I kept thinking about my choice and thought yeah, I have always known I wanted to work in the healthcare system somehow. Now all I had to do was apply for different colleges and hope I get into one with a great nursing program.
I remember getting my acceptance letter into my college like it was yesterday. All the hard work, studying and working my butt off to get into the school of my dreams really paid off. Going in to schedule my classes for the first time, they asked me what degree I wanted to pursue, and of course I said nursing, knowing they had one of the top nursing programs for a Community College in Michigan.
I went on taking basic classes like English and Math, I also took Medical Terminology, which is a requirement for the nursing program. After about two semesters in, right in the middle of my summer semester, there was a voice in the back of my head that I had realized had been there since graduation, telling me that nursing wasn't for me. So while scheduling my classes for the following fall, I had changed my major to Forensics and have stuck with it. This is what I really want to do.
Being nervous about life after college is a good thing. It reminds you of what a difference you can make. It's okay to change your major. I am an indecisive person. If my friends and I are ever trying to figure out where to eat you can count on me to say "I don't care" or "I don't know."
Being indecisive is not a bad thing, but when it comes to picking your major it can be horrible. The process of changing your major and classes is not easy. I had to send multiple emails, meet with advisors, find classes that they offered that would work for my degree in the long run. You might be indecisive, like me, but that's the beauty of college... we do not have to know what we are gonna do yet.
If you are to pick the right major, I hope that it is something that challenges you in new ways and really makes you feel like you can achieve a fulfilling life in the wake of hard work. Just because you start in one major doesn’t mean it’s the major for you. Why do something you hate for the rest of your life, when you could be doing something you love.
