For a long time I was under the impression that you can study whatever you want in college so long as the profession you were aiming for promised a successful career in the future. If you were studying music others expected you had to pair it in with psychology or business in order for it to make sense (to other people) why you would go into that field. So many people, myself included, have felt trapped to pursue a major that only masked their true passions. In my case, I all wanted since the tender age of ten was to write. However, society told me that field was unpredictable so I chose the next best thing: teaching. I have so much love and respect for educators but I don't want just the next best thing. I want to follow my dreams. This phenomenon has occurred not just with me but many people that wanted to make art(of any form) their career.
Before my sophomore year of college I changed my major; which felt like a big deal but in reality it wasn't. I had felt so sure about my first major that it seemed almost as if I was lost at sea starting this fall term. Changing your major brings up so many questions like: Who am I? What are people going to think of me? Does this mean I'm a failure because I'm unhappy? How am I going to make a living and support myself so I don't feel as those my time is wasted?
Then I began to internalize the phrase: as long as your doing what you love, you'll never waste a day.
I began to realize that it doesn't matter if what your studying or choosing to do with your life makes sense to other people as long as it makes sense to you. You've got to follow your dreams, and you have to try to pursue your passions because all that comes from living in a world of missed potential is misery and existential crisis.
So I changed my major. I found that my classes seemed to hold more interest for me, and while a lot of my course work is prereq's I'm beginning to feel excited again about my education. And I think at the end of the day, if you're paying all this money to go to college, and putting all this energy into studying, then you should love what you do.
