Disclaimer: This is not an attack on pretty people, this is simply an article on us ugly people since no one seems to take the time to talk about us.
Ever since I can remember the world has been split up into categories. Short and tall, fat and skinny, and, of course, ugly and pretty. I have usually fallen under the ugly category, but to be honest, I don't think I belong there.
I think as we grow up these categories start to change as our perspectives on the world as we see it evolve. We begin noting people who don't necessarily fit into the categories we came up with when we were younger. Also, we reach a certain age and people who are pretty start to consider themselves to be ugly. They take a selfie with a really unattractive look and all of a sudden it's "oh my god that pic of me is so ugly, I can't even.'
My definition of ugly has changed over time. It is completely different from what it used to be. I may not be the most attractive person on the outside, but on the inside I think I am strong, confident, and funny, which to me means that I am pretty.
If you have a poor personality but a pretty face, are you still considered pretty? Maybe. But that's what needs to change. Our assessment of another person's merit cannot be just about looks anymore. We should end the comments that we make to one another that bring us down and hurt us because we are seen as not beautiful on the outside. On the inside is where you really get to know a person and they can become more attractive or less attractive based on their inherent values and the way they treat others. Instead of calling someone ugly based off their looks, we should call someone ugly because of their personality. That makes more sense to me.
I cannot tell you the amount of times I have met a beautiful looking person, and their personality is just the worst. To me, they are considered ugly, they are the ones who should be self conscious and afraid to leave the house every morning because they'll be ridiculed for their ugliness.
I do not consider myself to be ugly. Because of the perception of society, I am considered ugly based off the way I look. I don't care what anyone thinks of my looks anymore because I'm reclaiming the definition pretty to mean so much more than my external appearance. And you should, too.
