So this wonderful thing occurred: the original cast members of "Aladdin," Brad Kane who sang as Aladdin and Lea Salonga who sang as Jasmine, reunited on "Good Morning America" to sing, “A Whole New World" on October 9, 2015.
"Aladdin" was released three years before I was born, but it will always stick with me, along with other Disney classics of the 90s. Somehow, I can’t really get the Disney movies of today to stack up to what they were when I was growing up. The nostalgia is strong in me.
I can tell you that while I was watching them sing, I felt transported back in time to when I was really little and growing up watching renaissance Disney movies. Even better was the feeling of watching "Good Morning America", which I also watched with my parents mornings during the summer, and before I went to school full time, back when Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer were the voices of my childhood.
That’s the big spinner for the morning, but the whole segment was devoted to looking back on the iconic movie.
I didn’t know, for the longest time, that the actors who voiced Aladdin and Jasmine were NOT the singers for their songs together.
Of course, no Aladdin reunion could be complete without Robin Williams as the Genie. Although he couldn’t be there, the cast talked about him and his fantastic energy in the role, and the fun that no kid who ever watched Aladdin could ever forget.
So what did you think? Was the reunion, after 23 years, a fantastic blast from the past, full of nostalgia? I don’t think anyone’s childhood was complete without watching some Renaissance Disney.
