With the beginning of 2017 upon us, I feel a need to reflect upon the past couple of weeks, and what has changed in my life. The end of 2016 was chaotic, to say the least, and I feel a deep sadness after losing so many people.
One death in particular really resonated with me, and that was death of Carrie Fisher. Most know her only as her role in Star Wars as Princess Leia, and nothing else. While this was a very important role, because of her strength and wit, she was much more than just Princess Leia.
Carrie Fisher was not just an actress, she was an activist, a survivor of addiction and mental illness, and an all around wonderful person. She spoke out to those who suffered from bipolar disorder, after she openly battled with it herself, and even spoke to fans individually about how some days were harder than others, but that you can always keep moving forwards. She focused on telling people how to live with bipolar disorder, and letting people know that their existence was heroic. She told my friend, who has bipolar disorder, that he was a hero even if no one had ever told him that, just because he lived and existed. She took care of those around her, and loved them unconditionally, making sure those who needed her help received it. Carrie also suffered with addiction, and was able to come through to the other side, and talk about her addiction. She made sure to reach out to her fans, and help them as best as she could. She fought back against anyone making comments about her weight, and who she was. She was unlike anyone else I can imagine.
She was so fiercely herself and unafraid. No matter what anyone said to her, she always had a retort on hand, and was never afraid to be herself. It’s hard for me to write this eloquently without crying, so I’ll end it by telling everyone that I’m happy to say she was one of my heroes, and she always will be. I love you, Carrie. I’ll miss you forever.
