Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City” is one of the most famous TV characters of all time, and probably my favorite. As someone who has often been considered a “Carrie,” and an avid fan of the show, if you pay attention close enough you may be able to learn a lesson or two from Miss Bradshaw. Whether it is about love, fashion, or friendship, Carrie can give a little piece of advice to all of us, even if you’re more of a Samantha or Charlotte.
1.) "The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one with yourself. And, if you find someone to love the you that you love, well, that's just fabulous.”
Always love yourself first. This is often easier said than done, but is incredibly important nonetheless. Don’t let anyone get in the way of following your dreams, or try to change who you are. You deserve way more than having people in your life who don’t love you for you really are.
2.) “The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them and others you don’t, but in the end, they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.”
This is especially true for college students. Whether it is your family at home or your family of friends at school, they will be there for you through the good and bad. Nothing beats a great phone call with your mom or a lunch date with your best friend. No matter where life takes you, your family will always be there.
3.) “I like my money right where I can see it… hanging in my closet!”
Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy you a new going-out dress or a pair of heels. Bradshaw’s fashion is all about expression and that when you look good, you feel good too. I used this as my senior yearbook quote because I could relate to this quote so well. A new outfit or pair of shoes can give you that little boost of confidence you’ve been looking for.
4.) “I am someone who is looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love.”
Never settle for anything less than this kind of love. Never let a bad breakup or poor timing leave you bitter. Unconditional love exists, you just haven’t found your Mr. Big yet.
5.) “They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style.”
Your friends are the people who will pick you up when you're down, celebrate your biggest achievements, and dance the night away with you all Friday and Saturday night (okay and most likely Thursday too). The memories that you make with your friends will live on longer than any trend or style that has come to date. Especially those nights when you're not actually sure who was supposed to be “Mom” tonight.
6.) “And we were dressed head to toe in love, the only label that never goes out of style.”
Cheers to the most fashionable and desirable label in the world—love. It shines through in your eyes, smile, and character. Love your family, love your friends, and love yourself.
