Nicki Minaj and Cardi B are both artists (rappers, more specifically) that I enjoy listening to. Nicki, albeit, resonates more with me because of how much I listened to her music while I was growing up. I honestly felt like the most badass sixth grader when I got all the words to “Super Bass" correct (still do — no shame).
Cardi B, although just having joined the music scene, is no less of a success. I admire her background story the most, especially because I'm also from New York City and understand how hard it can be making a living here. She literally went from 0 to 100, and I honestly respect her a lot for that. Cardi B has worked immensely to get to where she is today. "Bodak Yellow," her first single, was revolutionary and gives me the same badass feelings as "Super Bass" did.
Nevertheless, I was just as shook as everyone else when headlines broke of Nicki and Cardi brawling at a club party. Of course, memes began to churn out, but I didn't find most of them funny. Sure Cardi had a bump on her eyebrow and Nicki had a shoe thrown at her, but what part of this story was amusing? Is it because the two are doing exactly of what everyone else expects of them as women, to have a catfight in public over petty things?
My question is why Cardi B and Nicki Minaj can't coexist. People shoot back with the claim that Cardi is trying to steal Nicki's throne and TBH, Cardi didn't do much to quench those rumors when she showed up to the VMAs with a crown on, calling herself the “Empress." However, it's just a ridiculous idea in the first place. The music world doesn't need an internal hierarchy. Music should be shared for enjoyment, and sure, charts and numbers are an added bonus, but they definitely shouldn't be the main focus.
If the plethora of male rappers (too many to count, and honestly, what's up with all of them sticking "lil" in their names?) we have today don't have problems with each other, why are we encouraging Nicki and Cardi to keep theirs? If these rappers can coexist and even make successful collabs together, why can't Nicki and Cardi follow suit?
They are both talented and successful, they don't have to engage in these media-fueled fights. Things like subliminal tweets and physical brawls are extremely immature for artists of their like.
This may or may not be a publicity stunt, and maybe they're secretly recording a collab now as we all believe they hate each other's guts. Whatever it may be, Cardi, Nicki, and all other musicians should know that they are role models for millions of people. They are definitely not setting themselves as good examples, and IMO are simultaneously hurting their own careers. They both need to grow up and realize they can both be rappers and not treat it as a kindergarten competition.
