Super Bowl Sunday brought us some funny commercials and a handful of awesome new movie trailers. "The Jungle Book," "X-men: Apocalypse" and even "Independence Day: Resurgence" were among the films that gave fans a teaser. But I am not here to talk about any of those films. There was a much more awesome trailer worth talking about, and it features Marvel's top two fan favorites going at it. I'm of course talking about "Captain America: Civil War."
Now, this trailer was was not a true trailer, but more of a 30-second teaser. Still, there is plenty to digest.
The trailer begins with a large set of doors opening. This is then followed by a quick shot of Cap walking toward the camera. They clearly want you to think Cap is about to walk through these doors to see what is behind them. However, I would not be surprised if this was deception with the editing. Trailers are good at that.
What follows is the first truly interesting part of this trailer. It's Bucky, who appears to be in Winter Soldier mode while in this fancy machine of sorts.
I am going to venture a guess that this shot comes rather early in the film, maybe even the first scene. This seems like it could be Hydra's way of "storing" the Winter Soldier, most likely after recapturing him between the events of "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and this film. The machine is probably a way to wipe Bucky's memory or put him in a state of unconsciousness so that Hydra can maintain control of him, considering he seemed to remember bits of his past the last time we saw him.
We then get a quick shot of Falcon crouching on top of a building, surveying what is below. Then a large group of officers have their weapons ready in some form of a tunnel. This is followed by Cap and Bucky in what looks like the same tunnel.
Cap is holding his hand out in front of Bucky, as if to tell Bucky not to do anything. There is also a black glove that one would assume is coming from one of the officers in the previous clip. It's an outside shot that the black glove could belong to Black Panther, if these two shots are not actually chronological like we are led to believe. I also want to point out that Bucky is wearing the red shirt from the post scene in "Ant Man." More on that later.
We then see Cap jumping through a window and kicking a guy wearing what looks like a helmet and bulletproof vest. Maybe one of the officers from the tunnel scene? Then we get a shot of an explosion coming from the side of a building. This is followed by Scarlet Witch in civilian clothes covering her mouth in shock. Maybe this is her witnessing the building explosion? I would guess not since the background here does not appear to be a city, but more of a village.
Then we see an angry looking Bucky in that red shirt marching toward something with a purpose. Then we see Tony turn his watch into an Iron Man glove. I have to say, that is pretty awesome. I want one of those.
Bucky then proceeds to lift his gun and direct it right at Tony's face. Tony is able to cover the end of the gun with his Iron Man hand, stopping the bullet when Bucky fires. Wow, that was intense. Bucky just straight up tried to kill Tony. Look at Tony's face (kudos to Robert Downey Jr, as that is definitely the look I would expect from someone when they stop a bullet from meeting with their face).
So the question is: is Bucky brainwashed here? Or does he really just hate Tony that much? Well, we are back to the red shirt again. When we see him in the "Ant Man" scene, he is looking a bit beat up and disheveled. In this scene, not so much. There were a number of shots from the first trailer as well that featured the red shirt, many of which saw Bucky on the run and one where he jumps from a building. So my guess is that, in this clip where he tries to shoot Tony, he is brainwashed by Hydra Winter Soldier, with all of those clips of him on the run following his attempt to shoot Tony. The "Ant Man" scene would then come later in the film. The only piece to the red shirt puzzle I can't figure out is that tunnel scene where he is with Cap. I would assume this scene comes after Cap finds Bucky in the vice.
Next we see Black Widow watching some destruction at an airport. Then Iron Man removes the mask of War Machine, to reveal what appears to be an unconscious Rhodey. With blood coming from his nose, they are clearly trying to make viewers think Rhodey is in trouble in this film. I think they want us to believe he dies in "Civil War," which leads me to think he makes it out alive, although probably critically injured. Tony looks up from Rhodey in the next quick shot, followed by Winter Soldier Bucky in front of some snowy mountains.
Next we get Cap crouching behind his shield, with Bucky at the ready with a gun behind him. Iron Man then opens up a door, most likely looking for Cap and Bucky.
Up next, we get a shot of Team Cap! We have seen most of the team together in the previous trailer in the same airport setting, which seems to be the location of the film's biggest battle. Cap and Winter Soldier/Bucky are clearly the team leaders. Falcon is Cap's other right hand man, so it's clear he would be standing by Cap's side. Hawkeye is out of retirement to stand by Cap. As is Scarlet Witch, who for some reason is absent from a lot of the promotional material, which features Agent 33, who is absent here, as a member of Team Cap. Finally, we get our first look at Paul Rudd's Ant Man in the film. He is sporting a new suit, which looks amazing.
Finally, a look at Team Iron Man! Iron Man and War Machine are the two main members everyone would probably know since they are close friends. Seeing Black Widow on Tony's side is a bit of a surprise, given her being so close to Cap in his last adventure. She is a clear favorite to switch sides at some point in the movie.
Vision, who is essentially a human version of Tony's technology called Jarvis, should not come as a surprise. Vision and Scarlet Witch do share a relationship in the comics, and he did rescue her in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," so it will be interesting to see if that comes into play in this film. Finally, we have Black Panther, making his on-screen debut. He likely stands by Tony's side, more so because he seeks revenge on Bucky, who supposedly killed his father.
There is a rumored member of Team Iron Man missing, and the teams do stand six-five in favor of Cap. So who is missing? Your favorite neighborhood spider of course: Tom Holland's Spider-Man! It is believed the complex deal between Sony and Marvel is keeping Spidey out of promotional material for the film, explaining his absence here. This is not a bad thing, however, since I believe a Spider-Man reveal in the theater will make his presence feel more significant. And it would be pretty awesome going into the movie not knowing much about this take on the character, or what his suit will look like.
I would also like to point out something from the shot of Team Cap. Check out Cap's shield. I don't know about you, but to me those look like scratches from one Black Panther. Vibranium claws could certainly leave a mark on a Vibranium shield.
So there you have it, a breakdown of the latest teaser for "Captain America: Civil War." Did you pick up on anything I missed from this trailer? Do you have any theories about the film? Tell us in the comments!
