I have always been the type of girl who enjoys sappy chick flicks. "The Notebook, "The Fault in Our Stars," "Titanic" and "Dirty Dancing" are among my top favorites. I never really had an interest in the Marvel or DC cinematic universes. My boyfriend changed all of that for me.
My boyfriend and I celebrated our one year anniversary a few weeks ago. With that being said, I have spent the past year catching up on all the superhero movies I have missed, including movies featuring his favorite avenger: Captain America.
On Friday, May 6, Marvel released its latest superhero saga "Captain America: Civil War" featuring all of its previous avengers and a few new faces who were added to the crew. As a confused girlfriend, I always try my best to follow along and wait until the end to ask questions. So, for those of you who are in my shoes, here is my review of "Captain America: Civil War" from the girlfriend's perspective.
*Disclaimer: I am trying my best not to include any spoilers in this article.*
Overall, I would give this movie a high rating. It included all of the essentials of a superhero movie: lots of buildings blowing up, lots of fighting and lots of incredible graphics. It kept my interest the majority of the time, with only a few scenes trailing off into more dialogue and story building. Naturally, I did not understand some of the things that happened throughout the movie, especially the ending, but the movie is easy to follow along with. The plot is clear and consistent with the other two Avenger's movies.
The only real downside I experienced with this movie was its length. Not including the after credits, the movie is upwards of two and a half hours long. Sure, exploding buildings and fights are awesome but they can start to drag on after a while. In addition to this, we went late at night after a long day of work, and I always try my best to keep up with what is going on. Therefore, trying to understand the movie became slightly tedious and aggravating. And being in a packed movie theater, I could not ask any questions as I thought of them.
Here is my advice to all of you who are planning a trip to the movie theater or thinking about buying the DVD for your significant other.
First, be sure to watch at least the second, if not both, Avengers movies prior to seeing the new film. These films set the baseline for the story in this most recent Marvel movie.
Second, if you know you will have questions, either bring a cheat sheet—yes, they do exist online—or opt to watch the movie at home. This ensures that your questions will receive answers right away.
And lastly, show as much interest as you can in this movie along with all of the other superhero movies you and your significant other choose to watch. Who knows, maybe his superhero movies will change you and your chick flicks will change him.
