Teaching is such an incredibly honorable profession.

I realized halfway through my senior year that I wanted to be an English teacher— thanks to the amazing English teacher I had that year, Ms. Hall. I’m halfway through my freshman year of college, and my mind has yet to change. I’ve began my education classes, which have me so excited and more ready than ever to become a teacher. Ever since I chose this major, I’ve been happy to talk about why it’s what I want to do, and now it’s slowly beginning to become a reality.

I can’t wait to be a teacher.

I can’t wait to be teacher because I am so passionate about education. I believe everyone deserves a good, quality education and has the right to one. The fact that we Americans have the opportunity for education is truly a privilege. I want to do my part in the education system, as a teacher, to help students realize what a privilege it is and that it doesn’t have to suck. Going through school can be so tough. That’s why it’s important to have teachers who are understanding, loving, compassionate, and gracious. It is evident to students when teachers hate teaching, and it makes it no fun for anybody. Anyone who is there to learn deserves a willing teacher to be passionate and present about the subject he/she is teaching, or else why would the student care about what’s being taught? And for the sake of classroom dynamics, it’s crucial for teachers to have a relationship with their students beyond just knowing their name. I want to connect with students and know their hearts— know their minds. I want to be a teacher so I can understand the way they think and adapt my teaching to just that and be able to meet their needs. It is not enough to just show up to class and teach a lesson, assign homework and grade papers anymore; frankly, it never has been. Students need more. Students, young adults especially, need connection to thrive. I want to be someone that will help another person thrive. I want to be there for all of my students, to be present in their lives. Every student matters. Every person matters. Teachers are crucial to the development of students’ self-esteem when it comes to their future. Educators are the ones who plant seeds in their hearts, seeds of hope and wisdom.

Being a teacher is so much more than just teaching. It is teaching, assisting, cheering, encouraging, giving, helping, offering, being there and most importantly, always loving.

I can’t wait to be a teacher.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
