Everyone at one point in their lives has been the person that goes out to enjoy a great meal and then decides to leave their server no money or little to nothing. No matter where you go, if someone is handling your food then it might be best to not anger them. The quickest way to make a server mad and ruin their day is by leaving a bad tip. I know this because I used to be that person until my friend got me a job as a host and I was able to see the struggle of working in the service industry.
It was spring 2014 and I was leaving a restaurant, where in all honesty I just received the worst service that I have probably ever had and left no tip. My friend and I were walking to the car and all of a sudden he turns to me and asks if I left a tip for the server, I replied no and he laughed and told me that working as a server is one of the most stressful and worst jobs he has ever had. So,\ naturally I gained the bright of idea of working in a restaurant to see what the buzz was all about. I applied and got the job as a host and started work the next week.
The first day on the job was simple, just training and learning the menu. As a host I was able to witness some seriously disturbed individuals come to eat and leave. One of the worst experiences I ever had was one night when I pulled a double, first off the exhaustion of having to sit people down all day long and them never liking their seats and for some reason customers always gave me the weirdest face, as if it was my life goal to sit them to close to the restroom or as if I turned the AC down in the place, but I digress. But, nevertheless one night a gentleman walked in, suit and tie and drove a red Mercedes. He had indicated that he was ready to get food and leave, so we sat him down as fast as possible.
This is where things got a little interesting. This guy says he wanted the most expensive thing on the menu, and since I worked at a fine dining restaurant, the most expensive thing on the menu was roughly $20 but this guy ran his bar tab up a little too much and he got his ticket back, his meal was about $47. So, my coworker takes his order and all in all the meal lasted 20 minutes at best. He grins and leaves no tip, and usually I would probably do the same, but my coworker worked three jobs and provided for her family. So, all I'm saying is that when you go out to eat, maybe not at Whataburger, but at a restaurant, you are expected to leave a tip.
Even more, don't be the person that orders their food and bails out on the ticket. But, that's a whole different story for another time.
